How does Anime Lmtd. handle pre-order cancellations? I'm sure they'll sell out of the Eva sets, so I'll get one. But if it ends up being a 1:1 set that GKids is releasing and you wanna cancel, is it hard to do?

I'm not sure myself, this will be the first time I will have pre-ordered from All The Anime - I avoid buying from them because of the $32 shipping cost. Their Evangelion set will be my first pre-order/purchase from them.

For anyone who owns the dvd Platinum set, how does the video look when upscaled through a blu-ray player? I mean--as dvds go--is it decent?

Last time I watched it was on a 720p TV but it looked good enough. I feel film animation in standard def has just enough softness to the picture that it upscales about as well as older TV sitcoms on DVD. It's soft but it feels natural, as opposed to 480p/i digipaint shows upscaled from DVD.

The Platinum Eva sets are definitely on the better side of DVD quality.

Looks pretty good to me. It's definitely taken from an HD master (the "Renewal" master, which is also on Netflix IIRC). The colors pop nicely, and the detail is very nice for DVD. It doesn't look as sharp or filmic as the actual HD presentation, but it's as good as it could possibly get for DVD IMO. Honestly, I don't feel a strong itch to upgrade, I'm happy enough with it.

If you need comparisons between the US DVDs and the JP Blu-ray... Honestly, the Platinum DVDs don't hold up that well to the Blu-ray, they're not exactly a prime example of great-looking DVDs. You need to look at something like Geneon's Last Exile DVDs for that which held up quite well against the Blu-ray upscale, though Last Exile was digitally-animated, not cel-animated like Evangelion.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...2#post11303092 (Episode 16 had to be upscaled)
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...9#post11306449

Should be noted the Platinum Thinpak has a higher bitrate than the singles (said singles discs were reused in the Platinum tin and Holiday Edition). Also, Vol 1-3 of the Platinum singles were authored by M.O.F.C., Vol 4-7 and the Platinum Thinpak were authored by ADV Studios when they established that.

Though one should not judge it based on the OP alone, which was shot on 35mm while the main series was 16mm. In addition, the BD of Eva has some incorrect colour grading when compared to the original animation cels (what few still exist), so in an ideal world, the UK/US BD could fix that issue, but knowing Khara, they'll stand by it, even if it isn't flawless.

It'll be an improvement over the DVD's regardless and I'm not gonna spend $500+ on the OOP Platinum Collection just so that I can hear "Fly Me to the Moon".

My nostalgia isn't THAT intense...

Definitely a bigger upgrade than I realized when you directly compare them. Even so, the ADV Platinum DVDs look solid on their own merits. The Manga DVDs for the movies look absolutely awful though.

The Platinum DVDs were at least a significant upgrade over the originals which look terrible. Also the original DVDs still had the "Gainax Jitter". The Platinum DVDs are certainly still watchable, but I'd definitely want to upgrade. I will try to sync the original dubs if I have to.

You know that site is legit when you have Peter Lorre from M (Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder) as their logo. (lol)

(Seriously, go watch M from 1931. It's one of the best movies ever made.)

It was one of the first things that came up on Google when I was looking for comparisons of the original DVDs to the Platinum ones.

As a huge fan of Eva, I don't quite understand why people are so concerned with this. Yes, it should absolutely be on the UK and US releases, but I always skip Fry Me to the Moon when I watch the TV series

I never skip OP/EDs, even ones I hate (Ex: Vision of Escaflowne ED-how do you go from such an awesome OP to that atrocious ED?). Evangelion doesn't feel right though without Fly Me to the Moon. If we end up getting what Netflix got, we will see even the instrumental versions replaced which makes certain scenes less impactful. Now that is what I'm more worried about as that's in the actual show itself.

There's an Eva OST on Tidal, btw YMMV, as I have Turkish Tidal Hi-Fi, and selection varies based on where you registered your account. I'm not familiar with y'all's selection. There seems to be a lot more anime music on there than I had anticipated, as I also just found a selection of Escaflowne records.

This is one of those situations where I understand wanting to talk about something and not being able to say much, but I still wish folks on the inside would either say something or say nothing.

If you are watching them by themselves its decent enough, certainly a lot better then the original DVDs. But their is no comparison to the JP Blus, they blow it out of the water in every sense, they look really good.

I can't imagine them fixing the master at all. (Plus, sometimes the "fixed" version looks worse anyway) Still, even if we just get the same as the JP Blus I'll be pretty happy with it.

You can get the Platinum collection for around 200, so you're being ripped off at 500. But otherwise, yeah I would agree while it would be nice its not a deal breaker and worth 200$. If nothing else you can just ask Alexa to play it during the credits, lol.

If its an Op I like Ill usually watch it but otherwise I skip it if I've seen it a few times before. I almost always skip Endings (since, with some exceptions they tend to be forgettable) even though a lot of shows seem to like having little snippets afterwards now so I fast-forward to get those. So I can live without Fly Me to the Moon, Change The World was a bigger deal to me.

I haven't watched the Netflix version but hopefully we do get in episode music intact if they changed a lot if it.

I dont care about the dubs, but I do hope we get better subs then the Netflix version from the pictures people have posted of that.

They did quietly alter one of the lines recently. "Third Children" will remain because Khara, they're very adamant about that. Back in the day, ADV had to fight really, really, really hard to get "Third Child" which actually makes sense in English.
