The consensus then is to wait for the the next Apple 4KTV as it is expected to be more better, but no one knows when it will be released.

That's fine; I have plenty of other upgrade projects to complete in the meantime.

At the very least, I'd wait a few months. If it's released this year, it'd probably be announced in either March/April or September.

I can keep my attention on acquiring my first subwoofer then; finally getting close to making that decision.

Box Office Enjoys Biggest Weekend Since Pandemic Shut Down Theaters - Hollywood Reporter 3/7/21

Box office revenue for the March 5-7 weekend is an estimated $25 million, with cinemas in New York City now allowed to reopen at 25 percent capacity.

Quote:
"Fortunately movies this weekend drove solid overall numbers with Raya and the Last Dragon, Chaos Walking and Boogie, along with holdovers, bringing in a collectively impressive box office total of over $25 million," he continues. "This is arguably the first 'normal' weekend since the start of the pandemic, benefiting from a combination of an appealing big screen lineup that drove a strong frame despite only 45 percent of theaters currently open in North America."

The previous weekend, only 42 percent of cinemas were open. In addition to New York City, theaters in San Francisco and other parts of the Bay Area were able to reopen on March 5.

"It's going to be slow and steady," says Jeff Goldstein, domestic distribution president at Warner Bros.
Its still got quite a ways to go.

Okay. I remember reading one of them was pretty high. Netflix does usually sound pretty solid.

Would love to see it stay around the $200 price. I can upgrade every time at this rate and fine someone to hand my old one to.

Also hope it's somehow more awesome. I know the remote will be different but the old one does work with Harmony ect.

I would love to see bit stream or match bit rate or something for Audio but I don't imagine they want to do that. Would love to be wrong.

I should watch for clearance sales of the existing model.

Edit - Some hope they make a much cheaper new one like an ATV Stick - that would be ok too or maybe also.

Edit 2 - Petition for bit stream audio from ATV... it's likely the only requested feature from audiophiles.

https://www.change.org/p/dolby-mat-v...he-apple-tv-4k

I think they like locking down the audio to 48Khz though ...which is too bad because the intel based mac hardware still supports more sampling rates and things like CDs use a different sampling rate.

This "niche" is still half of all media bought.

You had made a post about predicting the future, and it applies here too. It isn't a niche and as for it "staying" what it isn't you cannot know.

That is true. But at the same time PM is only 25% of the total rental revenue market. And as you well know, PM sales revenue decreases each year while EST increases.

A niche market - the word is an adjective describing the market:

Quote:
denoting products, services, or interests that appeal to a small, specialized section of the population.
To foretell the future - look back to the past.

Actually the Nvidia Shield Pro does 23.976, 24 and 25 FPS with the Refresh Rate app installed. Will switch between 23.976 and 24 content without problems, will indicate it 25 content but you have to manually select 25 FPS.

Just learned the Apple TV diagnostics is not available unless you have a Mac plus remote keys are limited to basic functions. So it looks like I may continue with the Sony UBP-X1000, Roku Ultra and Nvida Shield Pro in the near term for streaming needs.

The refresh rate app will allow you to map keys to favorite apps so my first page on my remote looks like this (not current):

EST growth won’t make up for the decline in disc sales. Let’s not forget it was just 4% up YOY before the pandemic. I expect it to hover around 6-8% growth when things get back to normal, before fading badly before the end of this decade.

Shoot. I'm loving my current ATV4K. One of the reasons I'm interested in a new version is I could just give my current one to my kid. All of my online content is shared with the whole family and while she doesn't live at home anymore it would be easier to use than the laptop.

ATV4K has been amazing from the start if you ask me. Recently though, a few nice things have helped it along. First, Disney lets you have 4K in iTunes purchases now. More recently frame rate options have been enhanced.

It's a desert island device for me (assuming a good network connection.) I did bring it on vacation once and had no trouble using it with the hotel TVs. One hotel even had HDMI input as a dongle so I didn't have to do anything to set it up.

Infuse is my favorite app on mine allowing me to play back files from my NAS units in a setup similar to Plex type of system. The ATV4K does not do great things like bitstream audio but all things considered I'm happy to have one and I haven't bothered to pick up a Shield.

Back in November/December when certain products were not announced there were comments about it happening in the 1Q so implied maybe March 16. That has been shot down from multiple sources, it would be something that Apple sends notifications in advance if they are actually having some video event. Most of this has been about the 3rd gen of Air Pods looking like the pro without noise reduction, those Air Tags (Bluetooth device location), next iPad Pro, and ATV 6th gen. The problem is none of the betas are spilling anything hardware wise. Mind you Apple can have a non event they just happen to show up on a store redo (down for a hour or two) with no event. John Processor posted 23 to support Kang’s prediction that’s all.

I would like to get a better one and use older one with another 4K TV. I know there will be a new model this year, but it’s lot more likely to possibly be discussed during the keynote and in sessions at this years WWDC - June 22.

Reliable rumor or not, I will hold off on buying a dedicated streaming device until the new Apple 4KTV is launched. I'd hate to buy something now only to have a better device appear shortly afterwards.

Besides, I have to figure out how I am going to decide between subwoofers. I hope to buy one by the end of this month, maybe sooner.

I also need a new router; mine is 11 years old and it is getting to be a little wonky requiring that I power cycle it more often than I ever had to do in the past. So many things need upgrading around here, including me.

In terms of unreliable rumors, I’m waiting for the Apple Health Pod
