And of course something came up tonight and will not be catching The Night House tonight. I'll have to watch it either Saturday night or Sunday afternoon. The Protege is still on for tomorrow night.

Watched “Nobody” last night as a Netflix disc by mail. Will add this one to my shelf. Did not care for the multiple day repeats at the beginning but for me that was about the only negative. If you like the John Wick’s then check this one out.

ADD: The BD had a Atmos sound track. IIRC it allowed one to select Menu on load and skip warnings.

Added to my list several weeks ago. Looking forward.

Every shark film is a retry to sell Jaws.

That said, ... the cover art for this one could be a lot better than the actual movie.

I'm guessing you're a collector of shark movies then? I need to get The Shallows and am excited for the sequel to The Meg.

I've got quite a few of them. If you are near Big Lots they have a ton of the Shallows on Blu for $5. The UHD is typically inexpensive (~$15)

The Night House

A grieving widow (Rebecca Hall) attempts to make sense of her husband’s suicide while experiencing strange visions and noises in the large house they shared.

This is a very well made horror film with themes of loss, mourning, trauma and facing the dark in us all.

Rebecca Hall owns this film, and she needs to considering she is in every scene. He quiet determination to solve the mystery of her husband’s unexplained suicide
Leads her down some dark paths, is she dreaming? Is she seeing things? As the visions and scares intensify, her grip on reality is also at risk. The more she learns about her husband’s secrets, the more determined she becomes to face out whatever or whoever is haunting her.
The night house of the title is a character in its own right. It’s a beautifully designed home overlooking a stunning lake. It’s many mirrored doors and reflective surfaces ensure that the viewer is studying every scene looking for hints of what might be lurking.
Support is fine with Sarah Goldberg as Claire, offering her friend help and Vondie Curtis-Hall as a kindly neighbour who may be harbouring secrets of his own.
The dead husband (Owen) is a presence throughout, usually in flashbacks or images on a computer.
The film builds up its atmosphere and becomes intriguing as more and more discoveries are piled up. There are some very interesting visuals going on here which I don’t want to spoil, but the film is creative with its scares. There are also jump scares but even they seem elevated due to the lead’s excellent performance. Sound design is also well used. One early sequence will startle, while the final 20 minutes combine dazzling visuals with excellent use of atmospheric sound effects to draw audiences in to a thrilling climax.

Downsides, the plot becomes slightly muddled in places and the film could probably use a trim of around 10 minutes, at least in my opinion.

Overall, I enjoyed this film. It’s central mystery is compelling and the supernatural elements work well. As I said, visuals are impressive with the house becoming a character in its own right. Audio will rattle your bones.
Rebecca Hall is very likeable, her portrayal of a grieving widow is believable and she handles the increasingly terrifying scares without being too hysterical.
In fa t, she is so good, she is worth the entry fee. I dare say a lesser actress would have knocked a mark of my rating.

We are the try before you buy type. Have already added title to my Netflix disc queue.

We have watched 1000's of titles over the years but only purchased titles that had: Potential For Repeat Viewing (PFRV) ≥ 1. The first place that I saw PFRV was in the monthly LasersEdge from many years ago. I still use PFRV in my media database notes for every title that we watch.

I need my first film experience to be great quality and Atmos where available. Just the way I am.

Same here, most titles we get from Netflix are on BD, very rarely do we get a DVD version of a title. Most of the time said DVD title is not available on BD. Too bad the US is the only place were Netflix has disc by mail. We do pay extra for BD, they do not do UHD BD.

I'm the opposite, with one important caveat. I flat out won't watch anything that's less than 1080p. So DVD is out. As far as sound is concerned, while I can discern a difference between lossy DD/DTS and their respective lossless counterparts on disc, I have increasingly found myself impressed with how good lossy DD+ ATMOS tracks can be with streamed content.
I'm fortunate to have reliable gigabit internet so, while I can experience the odd streaming related artifact, and I can notice that Netflix has lowered their bandwidth, the results are not so agregious that it ruins my enjoyment of the film. If it did, to the extent that it kept me from being drawn in by the story, then the title probably would not warrant a rewatch by me.
With the exception of Tarantino or a true Star Wars film, there is very little that drags me into the cinema. Ironically, I would have gone to see THE IRISHMAN if it wasn't offered day and date for home presentation and my intention was to take my daughter for the next two HALLOWEEN installments.
Until recently, my first watch of most titles was on physical disc. With shortened release windows, I've found myself shifting towards streaming for first viewing. Classic remasters like True Romance, The Dead Zone and the F13 SHOUT boxset warranted a physical disc purchase.
