I’ve already given Shout my money for the H1-5 + vinyl bundle. I just want to know the source for the mono track on H1. Either way it’s not a dealbreaker, but I would certainly prefer the best available source and I’m hopeful that what we end up getting will be the best AVAILABLE. It would be disappointing if it all boiled down to a licensing issue.

The horribly compressed mono is no surprise, that's an industry wide thing that's been happening to various degrees for a long time.
Criterion is guilty of instating it on audio themselves that wasn't already nuked to hell and back. It's ironic the best home video source for it is their laserdisc of all things. |

I’m actually rather curious about the new Atmos mix. I wonder if there’s any chance in hell that it’ll be based on the original sound effects for a change and not just some upmix of the lousy 5.1 revisionist mixes we’ve gotten for years.

There should not be a rights issue to the actual film soundtrack. Criterion has the rights to the extras they produced (like the commentary). The original soundtrack would not fall within that realm. As the current rights holder for home video, Shout should not have any legal issue with using any existing source - no matter where it came from.
I also could see them not wanting to admit/advertise that fact, so I won't be surprised should they not wish to confirm the source, should they have gone that route. |

If Cliff happens to chime into the thread to confirm the audio source used then that would be great. For now I will be holding off on purchasing H1 until we get some reviews at release date. The rest I will gladly keep my pre-order in place.

I hope SF has been able to use the best available elements for all these releases, but if the mono for H1 is the same track as was in the 2014 box, then I'm okay with that. For me, the biggest audio issue of all of these was H4. The remix we've had for the past 20 years is a complete botch that defies explanation, so I'm very happy that has finally been addressed. Amen. IF - and it's a BIG if - Shout has actually produced a new Atmos track from the ground up and the sound effects are faithful to what was there on the original track, I'd be thrilled to give it a chance. Sadly, though, every surround mix of this movie has always been terrible, with a ton of effects that are just altogether wrong. And it's not even the effects that are wrong. What I'd consider the music is impacted, too. The missing chime in the sting when Michael's head raises up in the car, for example. It just takes me RIGHT out of the movie every time. If they'd go back to the original sound and jus increase the subtle ambience, I'd be far less of a hard-lined purist. I feel the same about Superman and Jaws. I just can't stomach any of the 5.1 remixes (thankfully, the saving grace of the Superman 4K is the inclusion of the original 70mm mix, which is terrific).

Jaws was what sent me firmly into the original audio whenever possible camp. After comparing the original mono to the thin 7.1 remix, I wondered what I was missing on every title I own that includes an OG audio track so now I always choose them and I haven't once found a remix more satisfying.
Ironically, the only 5.1 I don't mind is Halloween II, but unironically, it's because the original stereo track on that first disc is messed up. I'll look forward to hearing the for realz mix on that upcoming disc. |
