Amir excels in that format and he's soon to be speechifying at the AVS party on how valuable AVS is to the industry. But that couldn't be related, could it?

Here's a real question for our insiders- How come BR discs are semi-transparent? If I hold it up to the light I can see the label through it

Talking What's up, blu-ray fans!

Greetings all. Add me to the list of AVS refugees. It's a shame to see what's happened there over the last year or so, but I can't stomach any of the HDM forums at this point. Respect to Josh and all those who have made this forum what it is today. I remember this site when it first began and then after BD stumbled out of the gate. It's come a long way since then.

Of course, I'm making my first post in the insiders thread for a reason. I visit this thread at least once a day and have to express my appreciation to all the insiders who contribute, namely Paidgeek, Penton-Man, kjack & Talk. Awesome work, guys. It's nice to be able to peruse threads on this forum without some chump fanboy interjecting himself every 2 seconds.

As for AVS, thanks for all the great info the past 2 years, but I no longer feel the need to subject myself to the daily barrage of BS in the HDM and gaming forums. In particular, how the hell does a superFUD thread about "the state of blu-ray" created by a MS employee not get immediately locked and deleted?!

But I digress and look forward to chatting with you guys (and gals) about all things blu-ray! I do have to admit I also own a 360 with HD DVD add-on, but I am a true supporter of all things Sony, PS3 and BD. Here's hoping to a Universal or Warner announcement soon and a quick end to this dumb "war." The last thing we want is another 10 years of standard def DVD. The next to last thing we want is HD VOD with crappy, overcompressed VC-1 encodes.

agree that makes sense. Unfortunately I'm a having some difficulty proving it to one of the more stubborn supporters of the rival format. Is there something that I can link to which provides definitions of the two profiles?

2.0 is net connectivity on top of the 1.1, and flash memory of 1GB

Oh, so close. We called it the "Sure-kill," for reasons obvious. I lived on the Main Line in Rosemont for 10 years.

Paidgeek,

I don't know if you even check your AVS private messages anymore, so in case you don't, check this out: Paidgeek Appreciation Thread.

Of course even a simple thank you thread got seriously derailed and locked in the end, but many people did (and still do here) value your participation in the forum(s) and, I can't stress it enough, the real-world contributions you make to the format.

Makes you wonder, though, if no one at AVS thought "If we mod this from the start, maybe we won't have to lock it at the end." The fact that the thread had to be locked in the end pretty much proves your point.

To make this a question: How was Berlin?

Folks I had to come back down the mountain (Big Bear), as I cracked my bike frame (the rear triangle) landing off a jump and need to pick up one of my other bikes and drive back up the mountain. I mean without a bike on a vacation, I would be pretty well lost and there’s only so much fishin I can do.

Anyway, I checked my PM box and this is my comment to the guy that PMed me……..

When you’re an HD DVD forum masquerading as a “neutral” forum and can’t think up anything original …….why not copy the best (the blu-ray forum) and instead of calling it the Insider’s Thread Commentary, like us, call it ….um, um…….the Insider’s Tracking Thread or some such plagiaristic notion.

That way, you can have not one……. but two places to “question” any blu-ray insiders left around as whipping boys………and at the same time provide an alternate vehicle for red propaganda.

I’m outa here guys, on my way back up da mountain. And no, I don’t take no stinkin computer with me. We all watch movies in the evening.

I have a question about BD Live 2.0. Is it going to be just BD-J code on the disc that handles the online connectivity, or is there going to be any player side functionality other than just the physical link?

The problem is that if it's a disc driven feature instead of a player one, you can't just include online support on all discs and not have some kind of online content available when the disc is released. People would cry foul. Even if you later release something for it, how would they know you did? A lot of the time the studio has no clue what kind of additional assets they'll get for a movie a year after it's released. Today they don't bother updating promo sites after the launch window, and a lot of them even get taken down after a while because of that.

I've been thinking, and came up with a possible solution to that problem, assuming there's some kind of basic player functionality:

- upon loading a disc the player will check for an ID code for the disc and then match that up against a downloaded database
- if it finds a match, it'll display a symbol/icon that indicates to the user that there's online features available - on newer discs you could also have latent code it would match up on the disc that would then provide a more customized menu interface if that's desirable.
- the ID code of the disc and name of the movie is stored in a local database. This can be used as a simple list of owned discs, which you can do various things with depending on how advanced you want to get (dvdprofiler/dvdaficionado stuff for instance).
- when you download an updated list of discs with online connectivity you can then get alerts for all the discs you own at the same time.
- you can also browse a list of all the titles you own that currently have online features
- any downloadable assets such as PiP features, subtitles and audio tracks can then be used on any disc that's been released so far, regardless of whether it has 2.0 support or not.

Of course there's some IFs in there that needs to be worked out, such as the location and financing of the central database server etc.

Are there any provisions for that kind of use, or is BD Live limited only to discs that implicitly have networking code and what that code allows?
What BD-Live mainly provides is more local storage (1GB) and a network interface.

The software can poll the player to see if it is BD-Live compatible and if it is actually connected to a network.

If it is connected, the studios can, at the very least, provide page the lists other available titles as well as theatrical trailers and so forth. This might be the case for older catalog titles where we don't have a lot of content to provide apart from the usual. On a new release however, we can do many things. Downloading additional subtitles, audio dubs, games and so forth are obvious, but allowing other kinds of interactivty is being planned. For Sony Picture's part, we want to experiment with different things and see what consumers respond to.
