The quality was better than either Anime Ltd.'s upscale or the standard DVD, albeit very slightly. It is still treated as Makoto Shinkai's first feature film despite being a 30-minute short film so I do wish it gets at least a DVD-only release from GKIDS. It makes more sense than packaging it as a double-feature with 5 Centimeters per Second like what Madman Entertainment did since at least a pairing between Voices of a Distant Star and The Place Promised in Our Early Days can make it easy to sort Shinkai's filmography in release order on the shelf. I am still hoping FUNimation would eventually let their Your Name. licence expire, but that's unlikely. It is still weird that NYAV Post (GKIDS' go-to dubbing studio) dubbed Your Name. despite being licensed by FUNimation. It was probably because the dub was commissioned by Anime Ltd. from the UK and the translation was written in British English but dubbed in American English. Your Name. and Weathering With You were not just Japanese productions, but Japan-Hong Kong-United Kingdom co-productions. The Garden of Words would expire any day now but I am not sure if Discotek would let 5 Centimeters per Second expire, especially since they got it very recently. |
