If vinyl can continue to exist to this day, I have faith Blu-rays can too.

I do wish crunchyroll could fix their streaming service. The commercials are way to long and sometimes it just crashes and if I wanted to watch the last 5 mins of an anime I would need to 10 mins of commercials. At some point I just stopped streaming anime because of just how bad crunchyroll is.

Another concern occasionally raised by PlayStation devotees involves the company’s once-ubiquitous PlayStation 2. While Sony has in recent years devoted resources to bringing a handful of popular older titles to the PlayStation 4, the better part of that library is lost to time. For now, it seems that’s where it’ll remain. “When we’ve dabbled with backwards compatibility, I can say it is one of those features that is much requested, but not actually used much,” says Ryan. “That, and I was at a Gran Turismo event recently where they had PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 games, and the PS1 and the PS2 games, they looked ancient, like why would anybody play this?”
https://time.com/4804768/playstation...ro-psvr-sales/

So much throw-away society mantra and corporate PR. "True anime fans" ("true") will actually watch more than just whatever new big "fighting shounen" is on Crunchyroll.

I have always hated when any entity, corporation or individual person uses the “true fan” lingo. It’s such BS and gatekeeping statement. It’s always been an issue but I’m shocked by how regular and blatant it is in the fandom today. It’s why I’ve tuned it all out and walked away from regular or communal conversations.

I have no sympathy for anyone who sells or discards video games/consoles and then complains about backwards compatibility. Keep your items or don't.

It's really that simple. I hate it when people try and make it out to be the company's fault when said person got rid of their stuff. Sony isn't "gatekeeping" anything. That kind of argument is so dumb on so many levels, and it reeks of entitlement.

What if they never owned a previous console? Or what if they just started getting into gaming years after these previous consoles were discontinued?

Same here. If it all went to streaming and they just up and stopped release stuff, like GwG I'd just find a new hobby. Probably put all my money back into guns and tact gear.

Easy. Second-hand market. With that said - buying used copies of SNES and PS1 games is very expensive because they're OOP.

But then again so is OOP anime lol.

In your particular hypothetical situation though, it would be frustrating wanting to go back and play classics on their original console. On the other hand, Sony did infact release PS1 classic console and it failed hard. It's no wonder Nintendo hesitated on releasing an N64 Classic. So it begs the question; just how badly do people REALLY want to go back and play the old school stuff?

There's also a large majority of Gen Z/Millennials who could give a shit less about the classics that came before them. (sadly)

As far as meeting consumers both ways, Microsoft is doing it best with their Xbox, with Nintendo being in the middle and Sony being the worst.

Right, because everything works forever, so no one would ever need a more modern means of playing a game than the original system.

I've had my PS1 fail, but I can still play its games on my PS2 or PS3. I had my original PS3 fail too, and so my current PS3 can't play PS2 games. My PS2 is still going, but whenever it fails (and it will at some point; it's 20 years old and has had plenty of use) I won't be able to play any of those games any more.

The reality is, if backwards compatibility isn't available for a given system, than any games you have for that system will become unplayable at some point, even if you keep every system you've ever owned.

In some cases, depending on what games you care about, it might not matter much for a given system. For example, pretty much every PS3 game I cared about has gotten some kind of re-issue/remaster for the PS4. And the PS4 does have compatibility with the current PS5, so any of those will be readily playable for quite a while.

But if I want to play an older personal favorite, like Ephemeral Phantasia on the PS2, I'm screwed if a pretty old piece of equipment fails on me.

To hope for a reasonable modern way to play an older game isn't an 'entitlement', any more than people are 'entitled' to wish for an anime title to be released on DVD or BD. I'd pay extra for a system that offered broad backwards compatibility, and if games I care about are released on a modern console, I'll buy them (like I did for the PS4 versions of FF7, FF8, and FF9, or the Switch release of Grandia 1 and 2).

But a lot of stuff gets left behind; even fairly large names like the original Silent Hill or Metal Gear Solid only have a PS1 version, much less more obscure things like Thousand Arms or Suikoden 2. Which brings us back to needing backwards compatibility.

And as for the "people don't want to play older games" line, it's obviously false. Why release games for older systems on the PS4, like the older Final Fantasy titles, Star Ocean 1, the various Mana titles, the upcoming Chrono Cross release, and other more obscure titles like the Dark Cloud games, if there's no interest? There's a lot of titles like that available.

I used to be really passionate about backwards compatibility but the truth is that things have gotten much better over time. We have so many digital offerings now. Then came the mini consoles, which you can mod. International/Amazon distribution has become so incredibly accessible that you can easily import from other territories. Plus almost everything noteworthy is getting HD and other re-release treatments. It has become less and less of an issue over time. Gaming has never been more accessible.

I've always been a Sony and PC-first kinda guy. But Microsoft has absolutely been leading the industry in regards to BC with their 'Smart Delivery' initiative for several years.

I'm seeing the Crunchyroll logo replacing the FUNI logo on the spines of the June blu-ray slate. Visible change is near.

I’m pretty sure a “large majority” of the people who bought the very successful NES and SNES Classics were Millennials (aka mostly people born in the 80s) but do keep pretending that it’s only people born after 1980 who have no interest in older things (it shouldn’t require saying, because it’s so forehead slappingly obvious, but most people in general don’t have any interest in anything at a set point before their time.)

Also, the PlayStation mini sold terribly because it was almost universally panned. Nintendo didn’t do an N64 Classic for what should be obvious reasons - their online subscription service.

Gen X are folks who were born in the 80's. Millennials are 90's and early 2000's.

I consider myself a Lucky One. I am not a Millennial.

https://socialmediaweek.org/blog/201...il-generation/

Also since most of us own our anime this really doesn't effect us. It saddens and amazes me that these people don't understand licensing or the fact that Sentai have their own streaming platform.
