My dad and I went to Star Trek II when they showed it for the 35th anniversary. Looked good to me from what I remember.

David Fein clarified on Facebook that this newly-restored scene will appear separately on the home media/physical release, not re-integrated back into this cut.

I did a complete frame accurate comparison of every shot in the trailer. Enjoy!

Ah, thanks. Still contributes to the needed storage, though I guess you can get away with heavier compression on extras.

I imagine the extras would be on their own disc.

Interesting, sure seems as though several shots that are maybe from the Theatrical 4K transfer interspersed with the TDE transfer various shots appear to have warmer grading such as the shots of Kirk's shuttle at Starfleet HQ.

As said above it's not going back into the movie but I never thought it would be because they won't add anything else narrative-wise, Bob Wise signed off on the 2001 cut as his Director's Edition and they're not going to alter that after the fact. Yes, they're fiddling with the VFX all over to update it and might add some more embellishments that weren't possible at the time, but that's where the revisioning will end. Edit: it's a bit like with Lawrence of Arabia, even if they could now seamlessly recreate Jack Hawkins' voice to patch the missing audio in the scene with Allenby and Lawrence on the balcony it wouldn't be put back in because Lean isn't around to give his assent.

You don't know with Paramount these days though. They're doing a Universal more and more and putting the extras on the UHD because they're cutting way down on packing-in movie Blus with catalogue UHDs, though they didn't with the four Trek UHDs admittedly. Good job too!

The way the original quote was worded I thought this was something they wanted in 2001 but couldn't find.

Maybe so, but it's too late now is the point. So it's being presented separately.

There are many things that Robert Wise and his team wanted to do back in 2001 but couldn't. A lot of those things are being done in this new 4K release. If it was really meant to be part of the film, they'd find some way of re-inserting it. Wouldn't be the first 'last minute' addition to be made just short of release date. And even if it didn't make release date, it could certainly be added in later for the 4K release as well as streaming.

I mean if those new additional scenes were added to the already known special longer version I don't think anyone would mind if it were released as part of the set.

It's nothing to do with things being done last minute, not sure where that inference is coming from. The point is that the narrative should not be changed from what the director signed off on. I'm sure they're doing things with the VFX that weren't doable at the time, that's kinda the point of the 4K do-over, but unless they have a fine cut of whatever additional scene and Wise's specific instruction that they could add it in at a future date then the cut is best left as-is, with whatever newly finished scene like that one mentioned retained as a deleted scene.

That's not unreasonable and it doesn't really sound like the uncovered scenes were wanted anyways.

I didn't see this link posted anywhere. From a German site, trailer viewable in full 4K resolution. WOW.

The only shot they ever mentioned Wise wanting but not finding was a close up of Decker while Ilia heals Chekov. We’ll have to see what they found!

It’s probably an upscale from one of the 1080p official sources. If someone is going to post it in 4K, it would have been Paramount.

At first I thought it was just going to be a crappy upscale but for the most part it looks much better in regards to detail and colors. Except for the torpedo shot that looks rather poor.

That wide side of the shuttle approaching the landing area by the bridge really looks weird with different resolution assets and elements with the incorrect depth of field effects.

I wonder if the restoration team uncovered the negatives for shots that were dropped such as the full klingon battle footage which was included in the Apogee showreel? Would be fantastic to see those moments cleaned up and in widescreen.
