Now the Special Longer Version, THAT is something I wouldn't mind seeing as an extra. Last edited by Neon Rabbit; 03-28-2022 at 01:29 AM. |

Forgive if this has already been asked (or answered). The Director's Edition is being sourced from "the original camera negative". Was this true for the 4K Theatrical Release also or was it just mastered from a good film print?

Either they waited to release the 1-4 movie boxset and make sure this 2022 release was included or they just wanted grab your money again. I reckon they went for the latter. ![]() I'm just waiting for a 1-6 or 1-10 movie box with everything included and that may take a while. |

The difference being last year's 4K release used the as-is composite optical work from the neg (which is dupe material basically) and blasted it with temporal DNR. This one is going back to the surviving components and recompositing them, so they should both look better and not have the old matte lines. I'm keeping my fingers crossed the issues I had with the theatrical 4K release (the DNR on effects work) will be absent here. I haven't a clue if they archived all the cut material as neg offcuts - but if they kept all the effects components they may well have. |

As much as I'm excited to see this, I'm equally as excited for all of the special features. I used to be one of those guys that would buy a set and watch a film multiple times with different commentaries and watch special features day in and day out. Not so much anymore, but with this, I'll make an exception.

Every piece of marketing for the Director's Edition has always focused on the new visual effects, but the one thing that has had a much broader impact on how this film feels different is the new sound design. SO MUCH more is happening with this rendition of the film than the previous one. New ADR lines, an Atmos mix, ect. I wish there was a featurette on just the sound design alone.
I don't know if anyone here hangs out at filmscoremonthly.com, but Mike Matessino has been incredibly generous on the Star Trek: The Motion Picture Re-issue thread. His posts are totally worth checking out. If they could get him to talk about the sound design whether it be the new sound mix or Jerry's score it's be one of the more interesting features on this set. |

For the director's cut of TMP however, the VFX, depending on the shot, are either CG rendered in 4K or original film negatives/elements scanned in at 4K and composited digitally, meaning there isn't any loss in quality. |

I'm sure that a regaular Blu-ray release of the DE will come out but it'll be sold seperatly like most Paramount 4K releases these days. Unless there are enough extras for DE to warrent including the 1080p disc like with the other Star Trek 4Ks.
