What was wrong with the 2.39 ratio?

Bad story, bad acting, boring. My kid likes dinosaurs so I forced myself to stay otherwise we would have walked out. Too bad because I was really looking forward to this movie. It’s the worst one out of all of them imo

Only a few characters in this movie were truly terrible. The main issue for me is that it didn't feel like a conclusion of anything, much less a plotline from a previous film. Felt more like a new sci-fi thriller that just happened to be in the same universe as the Jurassic Park franchise. There were some great moments and the visual effects and cinematography were honestly pretty good. This should make a stunner of a disc on UHD whether you actually like the film or not.

You think this will be as grainy as Jurassic World? I know they were both shot on film but I have seen plenty of 4K transfers of movies shot on film that weren’t anywhere as grainy as World was.

All the Godzilla & King Kong movies from the 60's onward had no problem with massively scaled animals in the 2.39 ratio. Not to mention now we know dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus did not walk upright with their tails dragging. They're longer than taller - perfect for the widescreen frame. The raptors are roughly human height as well so there isn't a problem there either - and a lot of the dramatic confrontations between man vs. beast in these films were between people & raptors. JW:LK looks great. These are BIG SCREEN films. Not TV movies.

Don't get me wrong, I love the look of Fallen Kingdom (especially once in the household).

I just like to think Speilberg's choice of framing was very intentional and well thought out.

JP was initially going to be 2.35 and the first storyboards were in that format.

Watched this yesterday in the XD screen (as I try to do every time I go to the theater now) and thought it was decent. I actually liked it as much as Jurassic World and it was definitely better than the Fallen Kingdom mess. My ranking of the entire franchise is as follows:

JP - 8/10
LW: JP - 6/10
JP III - 6/10
JW - 7/10
JW: FK - 6/10
JW: D - 7/10

It's depressing what Universal turned the Jurassic Park franchise into. No longer Jurassic Park films, just action movies that just so happen to involve dinosaurs.

Went to see it again today. Liked it a bit more the second time. It’s fine.

Here's my unsolicited rankings:

JP: 8.5 / 10
TLW: 9.0 / 10
JPIII: 7.0 / 10
JW: 8.5 / 10
JW FK: 7.5 / 10
JW D: Too soon to tell.

I watched Fallen Kingdom in theatres and was so put off by it, I bought the disc in 2018 and never watched it until last week. And you know what, it's a movie with a lot to say. I recommend watching it again, and focus on the theme of man's relationship with dinosaurs. Weird widescreen choice aside, it's really cool. Even the whole Maisie thing. It all comes down to, "Do cloned/created creatures deserve to be protected?"

Back then 2.35 big tall & wide screens were the standard - theaters nowadays are for the most part fixed 1.85 screens, so any scope films are essentially letterboxed. This is also the case with 4:3 and 1.85 IMAX screens. The more the movie implements and takes up the screen vertically it's dramatically visually impactful. So yes the Toho monster movies were wide but so were the massive screens they were projected onto.
