Google play codes from a different country no longer redeemable?

Previously, there was a workaround to switch the google play website to a different region, to allow you to redeem a GP code from that other country into your account.

i.e. go to https://play.google.com/store?gl=CA to redeem a Canadian code,
https://play.google.com/store?gl=UK to redeem a UK code, etc

This no longer seems to work. You can still view another country’s GP store - the current weblink to do this would be in the format:
https://play.google.com/store/movies?gl=CA etc

However if you then try to redeem a code it says “This code cannot be redeemed from your country”

SO BEWARE IF BUYING CANADIAN CODES, ETC.

If anybody knows of an updated workaround please kindly let us know.
