Interesting observation... using Netflix on this player since I didn't feel like switching over to my Apple TV. TV is showing that From Dusk Till Dawn (the series) is playing in 4k HDR, while only being listed as HD. Is the player upconverting content and then sending it out? Interesting. Also switched over to Constantine (the movie) and same results.

Probably yes. I think there is an on/off option for this in player settings menu. Other strange behavior is that Panny "upgrades" SDR content to Dolby Vision on many 4K DV discs when you are playing extras. Those extras are in 1080p SDR. Recently this happened when I played Flatliners UHD BD. I do not know if this has something to do how certain discs are authored. Panny should not do that though. With Oppo 203 just the main feature plays in DV mode (maybe also the disc menus) but not the extras.
Regarding external subtitles. Last year when I was "researching" the topic I got the imperssion that external subtitles playback on official Chinese FW and 820 was a myth. It is only supported with enhanced/modified not official firmware. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=9924 This is how external subtitles and the subtitle menu looked when I tested it. ![]() Haven't tried it since because Oppo 203 renders external subtitles so much better. In case your are wondering the movie in the photo is Inglourious Basterds 4K and subtitles are from some random movie. I just popped in my 64GB thumb drive from Oppo. Drive had already SUB folder and sub.srt in it. Also, lots of other video content and 10+ other .srt subtitles in the same SUB folder. So, it does not matter as long as there is a sub.srt . Also, Subtitle Style option (3rd from the top) cannot be changed from "-". Last edited by hansolo; 08-22-2022 at 11:00 AM. |

Regardless, I think the advice you received is correct. If you title it sub.srt and put it in a folder titled "SUB" then external subtitle option should be available. I have folders on my USB stick with other subtitles in them, so the stick definitely doesn't need to be empty. |

You can shoot them an email, but I don't think their mod includes the option.

Yeah, about that...do you mind telling me what your CRT rig consists of (monitor, DVD player) and from there I can ask you to sample some problematic DVD titles through Component (bleeding/over saturation), and looking great with S-video?

Replaced my last crt about 4 years ago - a Panasonic GAOO from 1999 (cannot remember the exact model, but it was the highest level model the store carried at the time). My DVD player was (still have it) the Denon 3910 (calibrated to the tv with Avia). I used to think s-video was pretty good, but when I moved to component it was a revelation. There was simply no comparison with the DVDs I had.

Oh god no. I have the Freestyle. It’s a fun projector but not for serious viewing at all. Plus my Freestyle is already replaced twice in 3 months. It keeps shutting down by itself after about 15 minutes of usage.

Looking into upgrading to the UB820, can anyone tell me if the "playback info" gives you info on the bitrate and such? Always been curious with stuff like that lol
