Hmm. Can you post the link?

I remember looking at it the first time around, though, and just couldn't pull the trigger because of the price.

Yes; this is the link provided by the e-mail, it should be available here when the listing is published: https://store.gkids.com/pages/neon-g...QVMs%3D.Vqqx2y

The UE is still in stock on GKIDS' storefront as of 5PM Eastern Time. The password required for access is "EVANGELION".

Hard pass after hearing about the unacceptable quality control issues. I'm perfectly fine with the Collector's Edition and Platinum Set.

In a perfect world, these box sets would have been manufactured in Japan instead, for higher quality materials, and GKIDS wouldn't have to worry about most of the complaints. SMH. Hell, even the chipboard material on my Collector's Edition is starting to peel away. Very frustrating but I'm at a point where I just don't care about these releases anymore.

Technically speaking I'd say it's Anime Limited's fault since they were the ones behind the UE's packaging (as seen on the box's credits), but GKIDS and Madman presumably signed off on it as well so they're not blameless either.

In any event, problems like those are exactly why I really don't care for fancy packaging either. At least they didn't screw up the standard 5-disc edition, which is the only SKU that I ever really wanted to begin with.

Anime Limited's also the ones who hired MediaOCD for the disc authoring work so there was some good to come out of that, especially knowing the alternative on GKids...well, Shout's end wouldn't have been as good.

Fair enough. I wouldn't mind having MediaOCD handle the Western releases of 3.0+1.11, but regardless of whoever does it I hope that they don't try to cram the two discs' worth of content of the upcoming JP release onto a single disc.

Of course I would love to have the 170-page book that it ships with (which is a straight translation of the one found in the 2015 JP Blu-ray set), but that's pretty much the only thing about the UE that I would actually pay money for beyond what's already included in the standard 5-disc release.
I'm going to take personal and deranged enjoyment in having a more "complete" collection than the guy I consider to be THE authority in Evangelion home releases

I could see a case for the theatrical "x.0" versions of the Rebuild films getting an "Archives"-type release sometime in the future alongside their subsequent home video revisions that already received retail releases, but probably not their TV cuts. The inclusion of previously WOWOW-exclusive Death[True] and Rebirth in the Archives DVD box really doesn't serve as a precedent for the latter, as in my mind it was included as more of a "throw-in" incentive to supplement the set's primary content (i.e. the original broadcast versions of the 26 TV series episodes).

Death[True] also served as a "missing link" between the theatrical cut of Death (which had its first home video release in the 2015 JP Blu-ray box set at the same time as the Archives DVD box) and Death[True]² (the only version of Death which had been on home video between 1998-2014), while the Rebuild TV cuts were created after their most recent retail revision and were presumably edited for time and/or content. Since WOWOW was a premium satellite TV channel (which actually meant something back in 1998), neither consideration would've been applicable to the creation process of Death[True].

That fomo power is strong. I was tempted too, but they don't accept PayPal so I ultimately passed. Its Evangelion so I think it's a safe bet it'll retain its value for years.

The TV cuts of the Rebuild films are actually longer. They are all 114 minutes long. 2.22 was 112 minutes so the Nippon TV version is 2 minutes longer while the TV versions of Q are 19 minutes longer.

The first three films were also originally rendered in 720p (before being upscaled to 1080p and then 4K for the BS4K airings) so maybe these Archives-type releases of the TV versions could only have 720p video files to fit in multiple versions of a film without sacrificing quality too much.

And compiling multiple TV versions of a film in one release is a common thing in Japan, at least for foreign films. Top Gun’s recent 4K release included both the Fuji TV and TV Tokyo dubs of the film. There are also collector’s editions of the four Alien films (and Prometheus) that have different Japanese TV dubs, including TV versions. WB Japan released Collector’s Editions of Singin’ in the Rain and Blade Runner that also include multiple Japanese TV dubs.

So has there been any news or even hints that we will see the first three movies re released in English regions, and that we might get the fourth too?

The most recent piece of actual news I can think of is that GKIDS was asked about the first three Rebuild films at their Anime Expo panel in July (which was about a month after they had announced their 3.0+1.0 acquisition), and at that time they stated that they didn't have the rights to them. I'm pretty sure that GKIDS will eventually license them whenever they're made available by Khara at some future date, though.

As things stand on the US home video front, 2.22 and 3.33 are still readily available new at Amazon for well under their MSRPs while 1.11 is still OOP and commanding $40-$80 on eBay depending on the condition and which pressing is in play (i.e. digipak vs standard case). The two other options for the first film are either to buy the licensed sub-only Hong Kong Blu-ray of 1.11 (if your player can only play Region-A discs) or the recently reprinted UK Blu-ray of 1.11 (if your player can also play discs that are locked to Region-B).

Regarding the release date for GKIDS' 3.0+1.11 DVD/BDs, they haven't made any announcements on exactly when it'll happen. Obviously it's not going to be before March 8th 2023, as that's when it's hitting Japanese store shelves. My completely uninformed guess is that it'll be sometime in the second half of 2023.

hey guys
how much do you think is likely a Rebuild boxset?
or even a newer director's cut of 3.0+1.0?

I am talking Japan...as I only ever buy Japanese editions of just about anything

I was thinking to get all 4 movies from Amazon Jp, as prices are ok (well, I know I'll get them next March when 3.0+1.0 is released)

There's a recent Italian news article which implies that that Khara isn't currently interested in having a Rebuild box set. I would think that if they were to create one in the near future, they would've announced it last month alongside 3.0+1.11.

As for a "newer director's cut" of 3.0+1.0, that's exactly what its being released in the form of 3.0+1.11 on DVD/BD/4K. It's a new version that hasn't been seen yet either theatrically (i.e. 3.0+1.0 / 3.0+1.01) or via Amazon Prime (i.e. 3.0+1.01).

thanks a lot for that

this is the line I suppose

I giapponesi non vogliono venga fatto un cofanetto con tutti i film del Rebuild di Evangelion. Forse dopo l'uscita di un cofanetto in Giappone si potrà fare anche da noi;
which is a bit misleading TBH, as the 2nd part states, more or less, "maybe we will have a boxset, after it's released in Japan"

but I am sure SOMETHING will happen, in a few years, for the 30th anniversary

svenge, buddy, really sorry to take too much advantage of your kindness, but wanted to ask something about the Archives DVD, as I just am unable to locate the thread over at evageeks. I have the opprtunity to buy one at good price

I am sure I remember the first press had a mastering error, which was about the WOWOW edition of DeathTrue, that I am looking forward to watch for long time
was it something as negligible as for the BD box? (just a title error for the Air episodes) or something major?

Between 00.41.58 and 00.42.04 there is a cut in the top right corner from a different scene that shouldn't be there. It's like a "picture-in-picture".

I've linked a gallery to illustrate the error. It's in a pretty important scene
[Show spoiler]where Naoko strangles the young "Rei I"
, so I have no idea how it ever passed QC originally!

The thing is that there's really no way to visually determine if any given listing of the Archives box set has the fixed disc unless the seller explicitly states as such like Mandarake does.

The timestamps for the DVD's file structure also changed:
  • Faulty: 7/27/2015
  • Fixed: 9/14/2015
