Very much down for that Empire set. Just show me the pre-order link.

re: Hellraiser / House

If they were just going to do 4K releases why would they need to discontinue the existing bluray? They didn't need to discontinue the blurays of Silent Running, The Last Starfighter, Mallrats or Waterworld prior to their 4Ks.

As previously mentioned it's also weird that it's only being discontinued in the US/CA.

Maybe the rights came up and Shout made a better offer? Would be a shame.

It's possible Shout may have the Hellraiser sequels but decided a box set with all of the movies would be more enticing. Perhaps Arrow let them go as a favor to Shout. In exchange for other favors.

I also agree that the Waterworld release is somewhat pointless if they are only giving the theatrical cut a 4K scan and not the superior extended cuts.

I also don't like the branding/design of the Empire box. It's a pretty major release but you would have no idea what was in the box or why it's special if you saw it in a store or in the search results of an online retailer. It doesn't even mention Empire Pictures on the slipcover. The sign that wraps onto the spine of the box makes it look like the whole set is something called Arrow Video VHS Rental. Which is not great marketing IMO and doesnt make much sense.

They likely would have had to pay Charles Band for the rights to use the Empire name on the box set which is why we got what we got. Band already released his own "Empire" set using Scream Factory discs some years back and my guess is that Arrow didn't want to pay for the rights to use the name and so they went this direction instead which is just as effective if not quite as clear in regards to what is inside.

Maybe there’ll be many Empire sets and you combine them to show a whole shopping district.

Fran's cryptic hints from twitter last April:

Looking at big deals with a variety of studios
- Have an epic deal in (mentioned before) with a studio we are working with directly in US for first time
- Recommending 2 big franchise box sets get upgraded to UHD
- Recommending delay of one or 2 boxsets to work more on major extras
- Have a documentary in submission to major festivals
- Have a major release-event celebration in the works for 2023

There was speculation at the time that the "celebration event" was going to be Empire Pictures. If that was what Fran was referring to, it would imply more than 1 boxset.

Can't think of anything else that's been announced or rumored that would fit that hint.

Alternately, the branding "Arrow Video Store:" leaves the possibility that future sets don't have to be Empire related. They could pick up some of the other OOP Shout/Scream MGM title and have the next be Corman or Cannon related.

It might be a better way of packaging these MGM titles they picked up. I don't think the ones released over the last year sold very well otherwise they wouldn't have been 70-80% off MSRP at the recent Hamilton Book and Diabolik sales. I mean, I loved getting fire sale prices on a few items but it's not a good sign for Arrow overall.

Could be in reference to the Bruce Lee boxset perhaps. Or maybe towards the Forbidden Worlds Film Festival in May.

Oh nice. That's the sort of thing that would trigger people's itch to own them all. I remember how Iron Maiden issued remasters of all their albums up to 1992's Fear of the Dark, and the spines lined up to form an image of Eddie. It compelled me to get No Prayer for the Dying, which was one of my less preferred albums from that era.

The UK Red Dwarf DVDs lined up to form the logo.
Pretty sure I had Star Trek VHS tapes that did that too.

I think there have been several sets of releases that do this as well including ones you got with magazines.

Hope they give specifics on the box set size/shape of the Empire Pictures Box. The more I look at it, the more I have a feeling it ain't fitting on my shelves, which I hate. Still will get it though.

I did look back at the timing of the Shawscope teaser just for reference when the Lee teaser dropped. IIRC it wasn't very long before the actual announcement, but the timing of the announcement was unusual (July 9). I don't know if that sets any kind of precedent for this announcement, especially since the teaser in this case doesn't specify a date.

Favors you say

Pretty big news to finally have Arena from film elements. I have to admit that I was expecting a much more massive set but Arena more than makes up for it.

I'm glad it's a smaller set this time around. It won't be as pricey and opens the door for further sets down the line.
