i'm sure this has been asked before in this thread, but how's seventh seal? i've heard little about it aside from a one line summary and was reading the back of it at B&N the other day...sounds like a really cool movie (and i'm sure it looks stunning). i know bergman can be hit or miss with some people, but im thinking of taking a chance and picking this up.

anyone else have it and really enjoyed it? (i trust the opinions of pretty much anyone in this thread since they all like criterion )

I greatly enjoy the movie every single time I watch it. It's my second favorite Bergman film, after Wild Strawberries, but there's nothing really bad I can say about it. The blu-ray transfer is tremendous, also. This and The Third Man have been my two favorite Criterion blus, so far.

(because I think there is an import of Ran coming soon to Blu-ray, otherwise replace 8 /12 with "Ran" on this list)
Yup, gotta agree with ya on those selections.

I have just received a few more BDs from The Criterion Collection. I originally thought, that "The Seventh Seal" comes in a digipack, but looks like I was wrong. Was there ever a first-press or first-run of digipacks for this title or did it get released in a clear case from the very beginning?

Well.... Liking Criterion or not..... This film is high on most critics lists, due to the nature of the Classic "Good Vs. Evil" story line, and the way it's been portrayed.....

I must admit.... although being one of the more famous cinematic masterpieces.... there are many films that I enjoy more than this, but I still consider it to be a must own due to it's importance......

Unlike "Gone With The Wind" not only do I feel it must be owned due to its importance..... I actually REALLY enjoy the film. (yes, I'll buy GWTW because everyone should own it...... but I find it very disconjointed at times)

EDIT:

I don't want to be misunderstood.... Although I enjoy many other films more than this, it's still easily in the top 100, and as far as what I consider "Great Films" it's in the top 15 or so.

I would risk the cost of a rental over the cost of a purchase. I saw it for the first time not too long ago ,and while I enjoyed it I can't see myself returning to it again and again. That's just me though, everyone will have a different reaction.

Default Repulsion question

Watched it last night. The audio was all over he place. Way too quiet in some sequences and way too loud in others. Of the 140+ that I own, and the zillion I have netflixed, this is the only BD that I was forced to man the remote for the entire film and I would therefore (sadly) consider this title unmanageable. Anyone else experience this?

Question: I had never seen the film before. The spoken language is English, so what was with all the very poor dub jobs? Did the actor revert to a native tongue, forcing the alternate dialog to be edited during post production? Or was the director just unhappy with the shot or dialog? I ask because there were numerous and clumsily obvious occurances. I found it rather jarring.

PQ was lovely.

I agree. A unique and good film. I am glad I saw it, but I can not see myself watching it again.

....but that's mainly b/c I love Japanese Samurai films. Ran being my number 1 epic film right next to Spartacus, Lawrence and Ben Hur.

The employees told me the sale will still be in effect Monday, and since I get another paycheck tomorrow... I'll probably go again on Monday, since my check should clear by then.

Oh, and Deads3t, I do already have Throne of Blood, but thanks for the suggestion. I'm actually hoping to find a copy of The Hidden Fortress on Monday... and not the Essentials version, but the actual release.

EDIT: Scary follow-up. I opened these up and the copy of Young Mr. Lincoln I just purchased was still inside the cellophane when I brought it home, had the tamper seal on, but inside - NO DISCS! The case had the booklet, but no DVDs.

Guess I'll be taking it back.
It sounds like someone might have bought the Young Mr. Lincoln DVD,took the discs,re-wrapped with a shrink-wrap machine and returned it to B&N,then they put it back out for sale!that's what it sounds like to me.

thanks for responses to Seventh Seal guys...i was debating a buying it with the Deep Discount promo...i don't understand a lot of those threads where people ask "should I buy this?" and my intention wasn't to base my purchase off of what people think...i think i'm pretty dead set on the purchase, just wanted to get some feedback from some other Criterion lovers

and beta, i think you make a good point in saying it's not necessarily a film that entertains you, but is a very important film. thanks again

Thanks Beta. I would really appreciate your input. I am confused because Pro-Bs review is all thumbs up. In fact he states that the dialog is A-OK and I found it, sorry to knock Criterion, awfull. Muffled and garbled. And Pro-B makes no mention of dubs.

If there are any veterans of this film, please tell me if all those dubs have always existed, or if they are new to the Blu.

Also!!! My copy has no subtitles for the HOH.

Yeah..... I went back here to check a review for the audio of "The Visitor" and although it was 3/5 which seemed pretty spot on to me, it didn't contain the issues I had with it..... (Very deep bass in the dialog in the first 30 minutes or so..... it may be throughout, and I grew immune to it.... but I don't know)
