yes there are other uses but they are not really comparable.
- music/books are measured in very few MB while films in GB.
- to stream film the provider has to have stored several versions of the film not so for music and books.
- because film needs high bandwidth, high reliability, local rights it means it needs to be more distributed for better playback (aka hosted in more locations)

as for games doesn't Sony remove games from PlayStation store? aren't there games where the on-line multiplayer mode is no longer available.

Netflix already run a system (decentralisation) where they don’t need to store every version of a video file, and can distribute video to far out locations that don’t have data centres.
This saves money and is Greener of course.

Where there is money, there will always be a way, otherwise we would all have to make do with satellite and tv antennas, which are far less carbon intensive.

Netflix is constantly deleting titles. Their storage needs aren't growing drastically. My comments were entirely about EST. They are the ones that keep adding titles and rarely delete them. It's absurd that there are plenty of people that think that will continue for the rest of their life. There are even lawsuits where people are suing to ensure that their one-time purchase of a movie grants them a lifetime of ongoing support.

People need to stop comparing digital purchases to physical purchases. Anything that requires ongoing support will never last a lifetime nor should anyone expect it to.

I agree there, for sure.

However, I don’t think digital EST would have the legs to last twenty years anyway, Like I said, it flatlined this year. Once disc dies, we go back to a rental (including PVOD) market, it’s as simple as that.

I did not say every title needs to be in every location. More popular titles will need to be in more locations. But most likely even more limited use titles that are only available in low quality probably need to be in a few locations.

Do you really think a day when people can "purchase" content (in what ever format it is) will ever really happen?

I do mate, yes. I think the young generation are happy with renting and subscribing to stuff, I think that will only increase with the next generation.

I’m clinging to my discs for a loooooong time.

Every generation the vast majority of people are happy renting most or all the stuff they watch. Maybe in this thread there are a few of us that are happy buying tons of films, but in the real world how many people of our generation do you know that have a few hundred films?

You reminded me of something that happened many years ago. I was an IT consultant working at a clients office regularly and one of the guys would show up after lunch to see if I bought anything and what I bought. When the project was over the guy in charge brought us all out for lunch and the guy brought up I must have a large collection at home, and someone else asked how many. A third person guessed 10, so they first guy laughed and said I think I saw him buy more than that in a day (and then the guy that guessed 10 jaw dropped)

I think back in the day when people would go to the rental shop and see the used copies for almost the same price there were a few renters that might have bought a bit more than they would have otherwise and they are gone. I do think with less films on shelves in stores it has harmed the impulse buy. But in my opinion there has always been buyers and renters and there will always be buyers and renters.

I always found my AV receiver display slightly distracting, even at minimal brightness. Today I decided to turn the display off after starting the movie. Then I discovered that it lights up for two seconds after using the remote! Perfect. Took me a year and a half to find this out.

Foam surround in my center channel gave out after 23 years of doing it's thing. I wondered why it lasted a little longer than the surrounds which all seem to go through this a while back.

I like my speakers and would rather repair than replace.

I had to replace the foam surrounds on my rear speakers a few years back. I ordered the necessary parts from this place:

Their customer service, and support in answering questions, was really good...at least back when I used them.

It's not that hard to do it yourself, but fully removing the old surround material can be a bit messy. Bottom line is that if I could do it, anyone can.

I left home at 16 and, up until very recently, have always prided myself in the ability to have complete control over all matters that affected my life... I've worked very hard to try and ensure that the road map ahead would be much the same...

But I'm of the mind right now that control is nothing but an illusion... and as I get older, I'm struck by how much my life going forward is going to depend on forces outside of my control... so I really am embracing the here and now... and watching as many movies as I get a chance to... and playing with as many gadgets as I can get my hands on...lol

I went to an acoustically transparent screen to get rid of the minor reflections off of my speakers almost as much as to get my front sound stage to come from my screen...

But long before that, moving my entire equipment rack to the back of the room was a game changer... I hope to someday have a dedicated external equipment room..

Having the gear outside of the room is 100% the way to go if you have the space to do it. I want to avoid any distractions whether it be lights, fans, or buzzing, but I also appreciate a cleaner room devoid of the cabling necessary to make it all work.

[Show spoiler]I have 10 medical appointments and procedures. Three of them (May 24th, June 5-6th) will make for really long days. These three days will be tough and not without serious risks.

When the dust settles I plan to post a detailed update, but I want to wait until I know the outcome of it all.

Tonight I finished re-watching The Hobbit movies for the umpteenth time and next up is The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. Escaping to Middle Earth each night has been a welcome distraction.
