What happened to our promised protection?

When CDs were being promoted, they were unscratchable and could be "scrubbed under the kitchen tap with a toothbrush" and had an eight hour capacity. When they arrived on the market, they had been crippled to just over an hour and only require an errant breath to scratch to unplayability.

The DVD is basically the uncrippled CD, still easily scratched with much more information at stake.

All the lead up information that I found regarding Blu-Ray made it clear that one of the specifications of the Blu-Ray package was a permanent cartridge to hold the disc, protecting it from dust, scratches etc.

Tonight, here in Australia, the release of Blu-Ray is attracting Media attention, and we were shown our first player ejecting a completely naked disc.

I immediately hit this site, to discover that all media being marketed are naked discs, and some of them in those atrocious "Jewel" cases specifically designed from the outset to damage the disc they allegedly protect.

Is the Blu-Ray consortium going to rectify this situation, or are they going to guarantee 100% replacement of pre-recorded media that gets damaged?
