As for this new Master & Commander release, I am super glad that we are getting a UHD release of this incredible film.
With that said, I’ll probably skip out on getting this one. I would honestly just wait for my iTunes copy to get the update.

At least Lionsgate, Paramount, and WB price them reasonable. Sony just goes batshit with their pricing.

Elevation seems to care more about their consumers than Sony does, and it spread to their Disney titles. Sony and Disney have learned the worst lessons from each other.

The jcard for this just says collectible, so it should be another Tombstone situation where they come in and out and not Kingdom of Heaven where it was limited and only have came back the once and probably last.

Sixth Sense, Signs, Lilo & Stitch, A Complete Unknown and The Amateur didn't get a steelbook at all in USA.

From what I have seen Lionsgate pricing is also high but I don't follow pricing since I am importing anyway.

I think it's more in North America the distributors are being way more aggressive with the steelbooks. In Australia and the UK it's not nearly as much. For example Paramount has only released Rango and Stardust on 4K in a steelbook in USA but Australia and the UK got standard.

That's why I think the steelbook only stuff is mostly Sony's doing, because Disney is released by other studios in other countries and they tend to have standards while the US doesn't. Even for Sony titles it seems other studios who distribute it gives standards. Elevation gave Kraven a standard in the UK, and All Interactive in Australia did as well, and Happinet did in Japan. Seems like the originating studio can assert final decision, like Panic Room, but distributing studio seems to have a good bit of say when they can.

I remember when Warner used to round up 2.35 and 2.39 to 2.4 in back covers. Also some discs that were actually 2.41, 2.42 etc.

2.39 has been the AR for almost 55 years. More than 75% of "Scope"'s existence.

It's effectively the same thing. Seriously, that's something no one cares about in production because it's a difference of 0.01" in vertical height on the film frame and everyone just treats Scope/Anamorphic as all the same because it's an imperceptible difference on a theater screen or at home:

A new definition issued in June 1971 as ANSI PH22.106-1971. It specified a slightly smaller vertical dimension of 0.700 inches (17.78 mm) for the projector aperture (and a nearly identical horizontal dimension of 0.838 inches (21.29 mm)), to help make splices less noticeable to film viewers. After unsqueezing, this would yield an aspect ratio of c. 2.397∶1. Four-perf anamorphic prints use more of the negative's available frame area than any other modern format, which leaves little room for splices. As a consequence, a bright line flashed onscreen when a splice was projected, and theater projectionists had been narrowing the vertical aperture to hide these flashes even before 1971. This new projector aperture size, 0.838 × 0.700 inches (21.29 × 17.78 mm), aspect ratio 1.1971…∶1, made for an un-squeezed ratio of about 2.39∶1 (43:18).

The most recent revision, SMPTE 195-1993,[12] was released in August 1993. It slightly altered the dimensions so as to standardize a common projection aperture width (0.825 inches or 20.96 mm) for all formats, anamorphic (2.39∶1) and flat (1.85∶1). Anamorphic prints are still often called 'Scope' or 2.35 by projectionists, cinematographers, and others working in the field, if only by force of habit. 2.39 is in fact what they generally are referring to (unless discussing films using the process between 1958 and 1970), which is itself usually rounded up to 2.40 (implying a false precision as compared to 2.4). With the exception of certain specialist and archivist areas, generally 2.35, 2.39 and 2.40 mean the same to professionals, whether they themselves are even aware of the changes or not.

A bit of a shame the Blu-ray isn't getting remastered with all the old extras. The PQ was showing its age when I rewatched it about a year ago. Guess we'll still need to hang onto that Collector's Edition DVD after all. And I had Paul Bettany sign my Blu-ray so I guess I'll need to hang onto that too. Lol.

Not really a fan of this new cover. The artwork isn't bad per se. I don't think it works against the blue background. Maybe if the whole thing had that old parchment look or something. Shrug.

Yeah, I don’t blame ya there. That’s more or less why I’m in the camp of waiting for my iTunes copy to get the 4K upgrade, rather than getting the steelbook. Makes me think that the “Collectible SteelBook” emblem (for this and Tombstone) might stand for “this is for the casuals, not hardcore fans like me”.

I think the point there is that Sony call the shots with their own product (even tho they don't do their own distribution any more in most territories outside the US, oh sweet irony) and have more sway with Disnee's US stuff for obvious reasons. But as Sony don't distribute Disnee's product outside of the US then Disnee can make their own decisions, including regular-cased versions of all these steel-only US releases, and I fully expect M&C to have a regular UK version too.
