The scripts for Kills and Ends were written in early 2019. Any changes they made afterwards were small details. The story and time skip were always part of the Ends script. At least, that’s what DGG and the main writer for Ends said.

DGG said that when they were writing Kills they were planning on having Ends take place on the same night, but realized that due to Laurie’s injuries they’d need to make a time jump.
I don’t really know what to believe. How could they not know before writing Kills that Laurie’s injuries would’ve placed her in a situation that would prevent her from having an active role in Ends if it was on the same night?
There’s also a quote in the making of the trilogy book that says that DGG conceptualized Ends before Kills. If that’s true, how could it have taken place on the same night? There’d be a copycat killer on the same night as Michael’s massacre in 2018? Seems strange, but woteva.

Also, if we’re being technical, there were never any plans for a sequel to Halloween 2018 to begin with. It was intended to be a 1 and done film when they made the 2018 film. I’m pretty sure I remember them confirming that years ago. It was more of a wait and see what happens approach in terms of box office and success. Although, I think mostly everyone knew there would be more sequels.

DGG and McBride said originally they wanted to shoot two films back to back but decided to focus on just one in case it bombed. I’m curious what this second film would’ve been about. Part of me thinks the story in Ends would’ve been the second film, possibly taking place a year or two later. But then if the trilogy was originally going to take place on one night, that would mean the plan when it was two films was to have a time jump, then when it became three films it was going to be all on the same night, and then they decided to revert back to the time jump.

The pandemic didn’t change anything in any major way. Probably the only significant change was having the film take place four years later instead of three. At least, this is what the filmmakers claim.
I don’t think COVID was ever going to be a part of the plot. DGG just mentioned that society would’ve gone through a pandemic. He’s just setting the stage for why the town is full of hypocritical gaslighting a-holes.
