Although I'm completely satisfied with the Onkyo PR-SC886 (well, surprised if not blown away, actually), I'm still interested enough in the UMC to at least give it a try and see how it compares AQ-wise. The winner will remain in the main setup. I also still have one of my LPA-1s connected to an old AVR in my loft/game room. I'm thinking it'd be nice to upgrade the AVR so if I keep the UMC the 886 may go upstairs. I'll see how it goes.

Someone's suffering from upgraditis! Congrats on the XPA-2! I love this amp!

I am currently using my Onkyo 806 to bi-amp my front speakers. My question is; Would two UPA-2 amps bi-amped on my fronts open up my front stage better than the Onkyo and take a little strain my Onkyo as well? I want to run one amp on the top half and one on the bottom half of my Polkaudio RTi10s. An XPA-2 would probably do better, but I am doing several upgrades like a new display, new BD player, and tv stand, so budget is an issue.

i recommend doing one upgrade at a time. this way you don't have to settle. with that said, i recommend you get the XPA-3 and use it to power your front 3 LF sections and use your receiver to power your front 3 HF. since you have a 5.1 setup, don't you should do the front 3 together, keep the sound evenly balanced, if you just do the L&R front, then your center will be thrown off in the sound. if you had a dedicated stereo set up then yes, the XPA-2 would be used for the LF and the receiver for the HF.

any of the XPA series will open up speakers to a larger degree than the UPA and give you plenty of headroom for your HT pleasure! another thing to understand, when you get the XPA-3 or 5, and connect it directly, you may find (like me) that it sounds so good, that straight wiring or bi-wiring on the speaker side is more than enough. I have the XPA-5 and have it going to 5 of my 7 speakers, same RTi10's as you, those 5 speakers are bi-wired and let me tell you, despite what folks say, i am very, very happy with the results, of course, that's just me. whatever you do, get some good interconnects from the receiver to the amp and some good speaker wire from the amp to the speakers and you'll be very happy i'm sure!

best of luck, keep us posted.

imo

Solarrdadd, the XPA-3 is the same amp a friend of mine suggested. I can squeeze that one into my budget. it is the same price as two UPA-2 amps. I can let the Onkyo do the surrounds.

Appreciate the help!

Talking Visit Emotiva and Test

It’s possible I may be visiting Emotiva around Christmas. I come to find out that my fiancé parents live in Franklin, Tennessee and she just got off the phone with me and telling me that she wants us to go visit her parents for the holiday. It will be for the holiday and the engagement situation. Silly part is I want to go because I can visit Emotiva, but nervous about the parents talk, even though they have known me for awhile.

I guess while there I can put some equipment to a test and possible give some details on my personal visit.

It’s funny that I knew her parents were in Tennessee and Emotiva was in Tennessee, but I didn’t put the two together until she told me what city they lived in.

It’s not 100% guaranteed I will go, her mother had some cancer removed and possible she may have to go back into surgery and this might not be the greatest time to visit.

it used to be awesome, but after the umc-1 delays they have been very tight lipped about future products.

PS.- the xmc-1 spec sheet is still not up on the regular forum, they deleted that thread because somone copied and pasted the info and then lots of arguments took place... lol. It should be up soon though, at least i would imagine. But some of the specs are very different from the original "plans" so they must be prepping explanations.

hey lou, i went there and it was up yesterday but was quickly taken down. checked the forum today and dann said it's up for all to see but didn't say where and i have scoured their forum but could not find it.

http://emotivalounge.proboards.com/i...ad=7417&page=4

i do understand the folks complaining. didn't emo just get finished with this whole UMC-1 thing and what do they do, they told us the info would be up on the site, monday by lunch time and it wasn't nor was it there tuesday morning, but, they then put it up on a VIP only area, now they say it's up for everyone but, no one can find it.

i did get to peek at it yesterday quickly before it was taken down and i was not impressed nor happy with what i saw; mind you that might not be the final product but it was a slightly souped up UMC-1. i think they (as i said in a post on the emo forum) should have gotten the spec's together, put them online first then either sent out an email, put up a new thread stating that the specs are available not do what they did. it really frustrates people and yes, i'm one of them. you would think after all the grief they got over the way the campain for the UMC-1 went, they would have learned.

no, it's not life or death but, we will all fall in a hole, the idea is when we get out of it, we shouldn't fall into the same hole again. still like'n emo but they really gotta get it together on this posting thing.

I agree, so far I'm not impressed with the specs. I hope I don't put more oil into the fire, but one thing I don't see in the list is DSD support. I think that's something a lot of us were hoping for and really my prime reason on wanting to get one over a UMC. But if I recall I think read somewhere that the particular chip they went with doesn't support DSD? We'll see I guess. As of right now my money is still on the UMC.
