Default Blu-ray in retail stores - reports and anecdotes

So since holiday season is coming up I just got word that (source: media sups had training in cali last week about holiday time) throughout the company the shelf space for both formats is going to increase. Can't say exactly how much and when but it is happening and there was some speculation of the blu-ray doubling but that part is still up in the air.

That's good. The media guys at my best buy go strictly by planogram. Though I told them this week they need to spread out, it's looking like a crammed library. There is one hddvd 4' section, one blu-ray 4' section, a blu-ray sled on the racetrack (front walkway), and blu-ray movies below 2 blu-ray display endcaps and also some in the PS3 game section.

Now if they would just be competitively priced with Fry's and online, without having to get a price match, they may actually sell a few.

yea supposedly the planogram is changing soon. Ill try to get some info on that. but yea we have the same thing at my store except there are no blu-rays in the ps3 section. our blu-ray sled/cart is kinda far away from everything tho. not sure why they moved it so far. but it used to be in the racetrack but now with the holidays we are putting the tvs on sale on the racetrack.

Yea, there are 3 of them in the Houston area. I usually go to BB to get the price match just for the rewards points and it is across the highway from my house.

That's great news. Are they also going to increase the number of titles too, not just the number of copies per title? The Best Buy near my place has so many titles missing (even those that I can find in nearby Fry's).

enjoy

yes they are increasing the number of titles as well. but the time frame for all of this will vary. but for example at my store we carried "a scanner darkly" for hddvd but not for blu-ray for as long as I could remember. But now we have more than 10 copies of the blu-ray version. and we also have "the road warrior".

And if you check online most of the titles (exception of paramount/dreamworks) say available at most stores. In time past, many of the titles said limited availability.

That's great news. It will help sell discs if people can actually find things they want.

I can go to Best Buy to price match Fry's more often now.

enjoy

I would buy all my blu-rays from Best buy if they competitvely priced them...I just refuse to spend $7-$10 more per title than I would be spending at amazon.

Honestly,

I can hardly believe how big it is already. SACD/DVD-A never had so much space. I hear HDMedia is 1% of video sales (probly just some HD DUD FUD) but they clearly have at least 10% of the shelf space at my Best Buy.

I just went to my local Best Buy looking for Troy: DC and Evil Dead 2. They were in the middle of expanding the Blu-Ray section by another 3 shelves (making it 5 total). The HD-DVD section was still just 2 shelves. I was able to p/u Evil Dead 2 but they are still out of Troy. When I asked if they had any in stock they told me "We have it in HD-DVD".

My Best Buy has about 4 shelves for Blu and 3 for HD DVD, but the best part is that they have 2 full Blu displays going (Samsung and Sony) with more movies at the displays. They do have 1 HD DVD display, but it's tucked away out of the main traffic areas.

I went to BB yesterday to get a coffee maker and check out the KDS-60A300 (awesome looking TV) and they were sold out of Surfer. They sales guy said they sell Blu 3:1 over HD-DUD and would changing the selves to suit more Blu. Currently its 50/50 shelf space.
