Film is a visual medium. Color is what makes the visual spectrum. It's not wrong for a film to be designed with specific color construction in mind for the effect of emotionally conveying a message to the viewer.

I mean, if you take away the ability to play with color, what are you left with? Nothing. If you say a director can't use color to convey a message, what are they supposed to show you? You'd be left with blank visuals and only audio if color isn't allowed to be used.

Doesn't get any more muted than the color of Schindler's List. Is that lazy? How about Pleasantville? Sin City? The Wizard of Oz? How about the TRULY muted color of Dr. Strangelove or Ed Wood? Is that lazy, or is that effective use (or, in this case, "lack") of color?

Muted color is just as useful a tool to convey messages as overly colorful displays like we see in animated works or things like Speed Racer.
