I think the point is that heat is the thing that kills the PS3. keep your PS3 cool and you should be fine.....i guess.

Im sure there are PS3 systems from 2006 that are working fine going into their 4'th year.

I have decided to try to fix my PS3 myself (instead of paying $150 to Sony). It gave me the 80029906 error code and I think that means I need to purchase the new laser. Does anyone have any suggestions or tips on how to replace this? Any success stories?

I've never really heard of anyone getting an error code and needing to replace the laser. Have you tried backing up your system and restoring it?

I was able to to do a my "normal" runthrough on Uncharted 2, as well as play about 5 or 6 blu-ray on my YLOD 60GB after a reflow. It did freeze once towards the last level on Uncharted 2, after a marathon 5-6 hour session (damned game is addicting). Not sure if it was a bug in the game or a sign I'll YLOD soon. Also done about a half dozen Nba2k10 games on it. Just to be safe, I backed up the save game files. I'll have no problem sending it to Sony, even for $150 on top of the $599 , (though I get the feeling Sony will be hit with a class action suit sooner or later and will be eventually refunding that). Noone should reasonably expect anything to last forever, but at least 4-5 years, if not 9-10 or so. Increasing numbers seem to be falling victim to YLOD in the ~3 year range.

A shame, because it otherwise seems very well engineered.

My launch PS2 still runs, even though it sounds like it's gonna die sometimes. The disk tray, especially seems to groan when ejecting. Ironically enough, my xenon 360 still runs, even if it sounds like a 747 on takeoff (and never much gets used anymore).

Again, how is this strange? You don't expect there to be more failures as time goes on?

Unless you have proof of abnormally high failures, three years in for a system of PS3's complexity, why would you say this?

You're super lucky if a laptop (not including display) lasts 4-5 years without a significant failure, good luck with 9-10 years.

I've had my 80gb ps3 for over 6 months now. About 4 times while playing BioShock, the framerate dipped really low and then froze. And 6 it outright froze w/o warning. About 3 times, the framerate was very low in certain areas or if I moved the camera at certain angles, then if I moved away the framerate became normal again.. The freezes happened as early as 1.5 hours of gameplay to after 4 hours. While playing Assassin's Creed my ps3 froze about 10 times without warning (over the course of 5 playthroughs). Once, while the harddrive was saving at a checkpoint. And another time it froze again 20 minutes after a previous freeze.

When it freezes I hold down the power button for about 5 seconds then the console restarts.

Is this typical? or was my ps3 defective the moment I bought it?

I have not tried that no. It would play about 5 min of a disk and pop the 80029906 code. I was told it was the laser not a software issue?

It never hurts to try everything you can before you open that bad boy up.

Definitely expect the older to fail first, though the longevity is much less and VERY premature to my expectation. Especially at the initial cost of entry.

Certain items (peripherals, if not 'consumables' like keyboard fail in that timeframe, but not the mobo/CPU. I expect to the replace a few controllers in that period, but not the core unit itself. Laptop probably isn't as good an analogy as a desktop, since this isn't a mobile/miniaturized.

Especially in the console industry, which is suppose to be more robust than typical consumer level PCs, not less. My Genesis and SegaCD still run. Hell, my ancient Colecovision still runs. My PS2 still runs. I am not sanguine that my Drake's bundle is going to last any longer. Get enough people with dashed expectations like that and the scumbag lawyers will happily mop up millions while the rest of us just get our $150 refunded back, possibly in PSN credit or the like.

Marine Mike, I'd just like to say thanks for posting those videos on how to fix the YLOD.

My buddy's 40GB got the YLOD, so he bought a slim. He said I could have it if I back up his files and if I fix it.

So I did, I also fixed it. Reapplied thermal paste and it works great now.

Thanks!

No problem man. While I may have posted them, I wasn't the one that found them nor did I make them. I believe it was either Caliblue or Toxa that found them.

However, I recently tested them out and they are at least a decent temporary fix.

Sony shipped out my ps3 back to me, as I paid for a replacement PS3 slim instead of getting another 60gb but I got an email saying:

Dear PlayStation® Owner,

On 01/04/10 we shipped a PLAYSTATION 3 - CECHA01 and if applicable, peripheral(s) and/or accessories, to you.

Your system will come with a 90-day limited warranty. Please note that, if the original limited warranty that came with your brand new product is still valid, it will remain valid for a period of 1 year. The warranty coverage on your system will be the greater of your new 90-day limited warranty or the remainder of your valid original 1-year limited warranty.
Your Service Request number is: 1-242743384. If you have any additional questions, please reference this number when contacting us.

Sincerely,

Consumer Services
Sony Computer Entertainment America

If u notice the serial number I highlighted in bold, its the serial for the 60gb that I sent in and not for the slim. It better be the slim or im gonna be pissed. Ive already been without my ps3 for 2 and a half weeks now, im not a happy camper.
