Can I use a 3D player & glasses to watch a 3D Blu-ray in 3D on a 2D 1080p HD display?

I apologize if this is in the wrong thread and all that, but I have what I hope is a straightforward and 'unique' question.

The main page is gaining more and more news boasting 3D Blu-Ray technology, "Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs" is coming, as well as the inevitable Avatar. I haven't found anyone talking about 3D Blu-Ray specifics yet. For example, I have a 57 inch Mitsubishi LCD TV that puts out at 1080p, and a PS3. With the PS3's upcoming 3D upgrades via firmware updates, will I be able to pop in "Avatar", choose the 3D section on the disc, put on some 3D glasses and be set? Or do I have to upgrade to a 3D TV?
