There's no such thing as a "new story". All stories branch from elements which are present in other stories. Sometimes a story can come up with an interesting angle at an age-old story (see: Star Wars), but in reality, every story is "old" whether you recognize it or not. This is what bothers me most when people criticize Avatar for not being a "new" story. But what they fail to realize is that many DIFFERENT stories are cited as the one it is "ripping off". I think my favorite was "Pocahontas in space", but "Dances with Wolves (with blue cat people)" is pretty good too.

I wouldn't mind a new Back to the Future with a new cultural juxtaposition. In 1985, Marty McFly went back to 1985, but set it in 2015 and have a kid go back and meet his parents in 1985.

But don't call it Back to the Future Part IV. And don't even try to include Marty McFly in it. No offense to Michael J. Fox.

They've ALWAYS been making remakes, you just never noticed it because you weren't alive then. People always remember 1939's The Wizard of Oz, but they never remember the other versions that came before it. Many don't even remember the NOVEL that came before it!
