Watched "Heavenly Creatures" via Netflix, first time ever. Yep, as with the other Peter Jackson movies, this one has lots of strong (and sometimes in-your-face) photography, vivid acting, and good special effects. Characters were strong and easy to relate to. The plot seems long, but it is pretty high-paced and has a lot of scenes jammed into it. Lots of strong conflict and drama. It is definitely worthwhile seeing once. 4/5

Jaws - Its been along time since Ive seen this film. To be honest It hasnt held up like I thought it would. I think its to long. They had way to much down time and over did the dialogue scenes especially for a shark film. Hour and a half wouldve been perfect. I remember loving it as a kid. The effects were ok not stellar but then again it was 1975 we are talkin. Overall it definitely wasnt as good as if it was 1980. I would rate it nowadays 3/5 Got Em!!

As I posted in the other related thread:
Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

Beautiful and suspenseful film. Beautiful because of the wonderful photography and suspenseful even though there isn't much action - psychological tension and unease of the characters being in the presence of James...excellent. Many have criticised the pacing and length but I was riveted to the screen from the get-go...

8.5/10

Watched another film from this Steve Martin collection, called "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid," first time ever. It's a pretty decent parody of classic film noir mysteries; its got some pretty funny dialogue, some good deadpan humor, and it makes fun of a lot of film-noir cliches. It's quite inventive how they combined Steve Martin's performance with footage from classic movies. It's well-made with slick photography and a decent production design. Seems a bit on the slow side, but it made me laugh well enough, and the final climax was brilliant! 3.5/5

...and it's good to see a relatively modern movie made in black-and-white!

It did look damn good in high def though.

Angels and Demons

Film: 2 1/2 (out of 4)

Not bad, but not particularly exciting either. As mediocre as The Da Vinci Code was, that was much more entertaining to me and benefited greatly from Sir Ian McKellan's presence.

PQ: 4 (out of 5)

Not sure how it got a 4.5 on the review here--I've seen innumerable films rated 4 stars and some rated 3.5 that look much better. Detail is mediocre and depth is almost non-existent.

AQ: 4.5 (out of 5)

Great AQ.

Sleeping Beauty

Film: 3 stars (out of 4)

Not much needs to be said--classic Disney.

PQ: 5 (out of 5)

Absolutely mind-boggling transfer. The clarity, brightness of color, and detail of the backgrounds is astonishing. It's an absolute pleasure to own this film

AQ: 4.5 (out of 5)

Not much going on audio wise, but dialogue is crisp.

Extras: 4.5 (out of 5)

The picture in picture commentary is truly great.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

Film: 3 1/2 (out of 4)

The best in the series so far. While some parts were a bit choppy and required that the viewer actually read the book (as I have), I thought it was very entertaining. Some people complain about the "unnecessary" romantic sub-plots which I think is a completely warrantless argument. Harry Potter is much more than magic and fantasy--at its heart, it's a story about friendship, growing up, and accepting one's destiny.

PQ: 4.5 (out of 5)

While a bit dark, there is good detail and decent depth.

AQ: 5 (out of 5)

Great surround activity.

Extras: 4.5 (out of 5)

I haven't watched any, since netflix came with just disc one. However, I know that disc two has the J.K. Rowling documentary, which follows her for a year. It is a fantastic documentary.

The Wackness

I really enjoyed this movie, the 90's hip-hop soundtrack was right on the money. Picture quality was ok, a little on the dark side. Great dialouge and two main characters (Josh Peck and Ben Kingsley) were unbelievable.

story gets 5/5, audio 5/5, picture 3.5/5

Definitely worth watching.

this definitely hurt me here. i havent read any, and know they get longer with each movie, so its more and more difficult to "get" the story. i personally prefer the first one, but cant make a fair judgment till i've read all the books (got the amazon set, been sitting in my bookshelf for weeks )

I highly recommend that you read the books. It was worth it for me and I'm not much of a reader at all.

Just watched HumpDay, It is a small release film, a good portion of the movie is improvised and I liked it, others may not but I thought it was witty and genuinely funny

I def know what you mean. I think LOTR is a great example of being able to understand practically everything going on without having read the books, but not Harry Potter. There are just too many important sub-plots that are trying to be fit in.

I know what you mean about the first one--the sense of wonderment is fantastic in that film.

They really are fantastic books. I've a huge reader and loved each of them. The creativity and complexity are mind-boggling.

I have no problem admitting that I read them because they really are a testament to the power of imagination.

We finally watched North By Northwest last night. Great spy/thriller! I've never really gotten up to speed on Hitchcock, but this one has definitely got me interested in digging deeper into his work.

Oh and the blu-ray package is one of the best. Picture and sound seem to be very faithful to how the theater experience would have been when the movie came out, which is how I like it.

Avatar - Finally went and seen this film in 3D IMAX! Very impressive. The movie alone is actually a great film! The effects and 3D is the icing on the cake! Cameron is a genius! I cant wait to see this again on blu-ray! My only gripe is I hate the seats at the IMAX theater I go to. I am much more comfortable at home. Other than not being comfortable I really enjoyed the film! I rate it 4.5/5 Got Em!!
