Cool External Media Storage Device?

HI guys, I would appreciate some technical support from you tech boffins.

I have recently bought the Samsung BD-P1000 (Blu Ray DVD) and Samsung LE46F86BD (TV)

Is it possible to plug an external hard drive directly into the BD-P1000 and use it as a library for all of your Blu ray films. Thus allowing you to access these films as required from the BD-P1000's on screen menu's ...and secondly can it be done in a way that there is no loss in picture quality (ie: 1080p).

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide on this subject.
