Of course I will let my own eyes be the judge, but my hopes are all but gone for this initial release from a transfer standpoint with everything we know up to this point.

Even by that small chance that I do find these "good", the fact remains that they should and could have been considerably better with a proper transfer and that is something that I cant let go

Interesting quote from Alan Gouger (AVS owner) over on AVS who has viewed both the blu ray and HDTV versions................

if you get a chance to grab the Mpeg2 recordings off HBO from anyone they have no DNR and are superior. Shame someone went joystick happy on these.

I respect your opinion and your passion, but you've admitted that you're basing you're opinion on other people's views and not your own. Youre so passionate about these movies and yet you're just going to rent them??? Oh, Please!!! Where's the credibility in that?

I'll be picking it up tomorrow morning on my way to work. This thread has had no impact on my decision; I'll decide for myself if it's good or not.

I was NEVER planning on buying the TEs.

I STRONGLY prefer the EEs. Combine that with this lackluster release as far as PQ (yes I am basing my opinion on other peoples reviews/impressions, but when multiple people I have come to know and trust over the years come to the SAME conclusion, it is a VERY safe bet that I most likely will feel VERY similar), and renting instead of buying is a very easy decision for me. What is so hard to understand about that? Going back to the TEs for me is a BIG step backwards. I do want to rent them though so I can do 2 things which are make a final judgment on the PQ with my own eyes, and the second which is to hear these lossless audio tracks which should be awesome As much as I love these films, they are usually only a 1 time a year watch for me which is usually around Christmas so a rental will do just fine all things considered until the EEs come out.

Waiting for the Extended. Plus who puts special features on a DVD in a blu-ray set? That kinda sucks?

'Dark City' and 'Pan's Labyrinth' are spectacular examples of people being full of crap. Yes, both titles have a noticeable degree of DNR, but if you say the PQ is "terrible", then you are full of baloney... I can see every hair in Jennifer Connelly's mustache in 'Dark City', just how much "fine detail" do I need? How much more should I expect from 1080p? Does a title have to be reference-grade to avoid being labeled as "terrible"? Based on what I'm reading in this thread and all the WB-hate threads, that seems to be the case, though it also looks like other studios are being cut a lot more slack.

What really concerns me, is that given enough pressure, what if home video producers actually cave to a loud minority, and start adding digital noise to BDs just because a bunch of blowhard ignorami think they are seeing film grain on HDTV, when they are really just seeing noise.
The unfiltered European version of Pan's Labyrinth shows a dramatic improvement in real picture detail over the US release. DNR removes real picture detail, not just "grain".

The only noise reduction that doesn't remove real detail is the $$$ hand-tuned algorithms used by LOWRY.

If you are watching on a television with over scan, you won't see it. But otherwise, you will.

Finished the movie.

I thought the movie looked fine

Yes the lines were annoying for however brief a time they were there (which no matter how brief, its inexcusable that they didn't catch that), and then there was the DNR and other such detriments (which as I said, I'm not very sensitive to, so I picked up on it MUCH less than someone like Ken would). But there was also scenes like the Moria sequence and the final part of the movie where they fight the Uruk-hai (spelling?) that looked great. And then there is the rest of the film which didn't look as good as those two, but also didn't look as bad as parts like in Bilbo's house.

My opinion on the PQ is a 4/5.

Well, my score is actually about a 3.75/5, but I only score in .5 intervals, so I just rounded up.

The AQ was very good. The Nazgul screeches =
What's your viewing distance in relationship to your screen width?

Indeed, grain is the picture, remove it and you remove part of the picture. I'm not sure how Lowry do what they do, but there transfers are most impressive.

Fair enough! I felt the same way as you about taking a step backwards with the TE's... I have a lot of friends that were severely confused after viewing the TE's, even said it was a bad movie... I totally converted them into diehard fans with the EE's! I had no plans to get these, but I finally caved in over the weekend. My reason is that this will be, regardless of the final transfer verdict, the best these films will look on our home theatres to date! (the free steelbook at best buy didn't hurt either) God knows when they will release the extended editions, too!!! (probably this November since I've just committed to these!)

Talk with you soon! This was fun!
