Default Tron: Ares (2025)

http://www.empireonline.com/news/feed.asp?NID=27523

Quote:
Tron Legacy is still months away from hitting our screens, but in a big vote of confidence in the film’s likely success, Disney has hired the film’s writers to start work on a sequel script.

Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, who have usually been spending their days writing episodes of Lost, will be locked in a spooky old arcade bought specially for the process and told they can’t come out until they’ve finished at least three drafts and found the kill screen on Missile Command. Okay, not all of that is true, but they have definitely been hired to write a Tron sequel.

Those two are the only people involved right now, especially since a greenlight for the sequel is a long way away – and is dependent on Legacy being a hit.

But Disney has retained options on the likes of Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde, and while director Joseph Kosinski’s development slate is filling up with other Mouse House remake projects, we’re sure the company would be happy for him to delay those to make another virtual adventure.

There is naturally no inkling of what the plot will be, though the world of this year's film has been built to include future stories and according to the Heat Vision Blog, the writers are dreaming up trilogy ideas.

The early start means that, should Legacy hit as big as we think it might, Disney would be ready to start gearing up production on a follow-up quickly, with a likely 2012/2013 release target.
Awesome.

This isn't the least bit surprising. It looks like it could be a massive franchise, so why not?

Don't get me wrong, I love the original "Tron," and I do look forward to "Legacy"but prepping a 3rd film before the sequel has even been released...Don't know if that's a good idea...

Lightbulb TRON Reloaded: The ISO Wars : Sequel

SPOILER ALERT: Don't read unless you have seen the movie.

COPYRIGHT NOTICE: I have no knowlede of a script. This premise is my own personal idea and not to be used without permission and compensation: Steven Lisberger, I'm waiting to hear from you, buddy.

Synopsis: Having returned from the digital world with Quorra, Sam is not content in having come so close to saving his father only to lose him. He copies an earlier backup file onto his PED (Personal Electronic Device) (as we see at the end of Legacy) and restores it onto a newer, more powerful server. He returns in a second attempt to save his father who remembers nothing. Finding himself "back in digital time" Kevin Flynn checks the time logs to see Sam is telling the truth. Now Sam not only has to save his father but finds himself in the middle of a genocide war where he must save the ISO's from extinction.

But in putting the digital landscape onto a new server Sam changes everything which benefits from the increase power. Especially CLU who is growing exponentionally in intelligence and power - making him virtually unstoppable as he evolves into a new MCP. Now Sam, Flynn and the ISO's must fight together to save themselves, and make it a free system again. Only with the help of Rinzler / TRON do they have a chance. Sam also discovers that his mother Laura (Cindy Morgan) still lives as a program (before she was killed in the ISO wars) and wants to save her as well.

Potential script snippit:

Flynn: You shouldn't have come back, Sam. I'm afraid....

Sam: Afraid of what?

Flynn: Don't you see? By restoring this world you are rewriting and changing history. Things happen the way they do for a reason. You upset the balance of power.

Sam: So? All I want is to get you out of here, and I'll switch it off. I can't lose you again, dad.

Flynn: Sam, when I created Clu, he was created in my own image. His program was designed to use a percentage of system resources so he could closely emulate me. Given the technology of the second server he could never evolve past a certain point. It was just enough so he could learn to turn on me. You realize I cannot allow this.

Sam: Can not allow what?

Flynn: Digital Armageddon. Clu was based on a server 20 years old. Now you put us - HIM - on a new server with 100x the power. His algorithm will adapt and grow exponentionally to utilize the extra power. Now his ability to evolve surpasses any Program on The Grid.

Sam (Stunned at the realization.): Or any User.

Flynn: This is the MCP all over again. "You're really messing up my Zen thing, man!"

Potential? I think so. It's a prequel that plays out like a sequel. Because history will change, there is no assurance of it being predictable. Just digital blood and guts in an all out war to save digital-kind. Plus we get to see some REAL tank action.

Thumbs up Steven Lisberger, I'm waiting for your call!

Lock me in that room with them. I already have a script idea.

I give you credit for coming up with such an idea so quickly, but you overlooked a very major point from the second film :

Quorra is the last of her kind. She IS the last ISO.

Tron Legacy isn't going to make enough money to warrant a sequel.

Between the holidays, international box office, and home video sales, it may not actually recoup everything Disney spent on it, but it'll make enough to where Disney can paint the story that it's an actual hit.

Honestly, I'm thinking it's going to hit at least 550 million worldwide. With a number like that, despite actual facts, it'll look like a winner.

And from a story perspective (having seen it twice), yeah, I want another trip to Tron. There's some interesting things within the film that I don't think are getting enough attention...

Quorra is being set up as the "messiah"...but of which world? Considering the implications of the ISO's that Flynn described and the unknown outcome of the Grid, it'll be interesting to see where they take the story.

For Sam, it'll be interesting to see what he does with the Grid. Does he, on purpose or accidently or by theft (from a villainous character) integrate the Grid into our real world digital reality (the net...)...and if so, how does the Grid evolve?

There are numerous ways to tackle a sequel to Legacy. It has nuggets all over the place...Dillinger Jr. being one of them...

I'm worried it won't be a big enough hit. I'd love another Tron but right now I'm not overly hopeful.

You are overlooking that Sam is using a backup file, not the time at the point of exit. If he uses the last world, his father is already gone. By using a backup file, everything is still intact. Thus, a backup file from one day prior can equate months or years in the digital world. In other words, he restores the digital world at the time the ISO's are still in the process of being eliminated - thus the war is still happening.
