If they are going to do some Kore-eda, they could release his new movie, Air Doll. I watched the Japanese DVD recently (which had English subtitles), and it's a good movie, even though it is a little longer than it needs to be. Bae Du-na (from Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance) gives a good (and pretty brave) performance as an inflatable sex doll that comes to life (really). It might not be worthy of Criterion, though.

There are 25+ Kurosawa's in the collection already. Blu-ray is just icing. A film is what matters to me, not owning all of the blu-rays.

You could also look at it the other way. If it wasn't for the titles like the IFC ones, Criterion wouldn't have to $ to release more obscure ones. Don't look at it as taking away from another film, especially a film from "Mr. Criterion Collection" (seems like it on here) himself, Kurosawa. Sorry it's just funny you thought Criterion would block a Kurosawa movie from being released.

I did a quick wikipedia check and only see 15 Kurosawa films as part of the main individual release Criterion DVD catalog and 11 Godard films and 17 Bergman films for comparison sake. Rumors of a massive number of Kurosawa releases by Criterion are greatly exaggerated. I'd say both Godard and Kurosawa are both getting about as many releases as they should given their body of work and popularity.

Wow, you turned it into a Godard vs Kurosawa thing now didn't you? And for what? No one brought up Godard.

And to answer you, I don't give a crap who you would take over who. You liking guys is okay with everyone on this board.

Now to be real for a moment, I like Godard's films because of my own personal political views are somewhat the same. Instead of me being a zombie to these imaginary things called "political parties" to act like people has a choice in who runs a country, I watch movies and read books.

Now for the people who say movies are just for entertainment, that's up to you. I'm fine with you watching sword fighting. I don't give a crap. I will now end this because someone likes to get at me because of my views on film.

That's also one of the reasons I like and respect Godard. His socialist leanings that come through in his films have a real appeal with me.

That made no sense. You can have a Socialist republic. What you meant was we are a Capitalist country. Which then I ask you, you don't think people should have equal opportunities?

Cut the crap. We were merely pointing out the fact that Godard films have a clear socialist influence. And for what it's worth socialism is completely compatible and can exist within a Republic as has been proven in numerous democratic Western nations. Last I checked we all had socialized police forces, fire services and military forces and the Republic called the United States was working out just fine.

I ordered 7 cases on 4/5 and got an email saying they were shipped on 4/7. Today as 4/9 I received the package. Is this a record?

Yes! Please cut the crap for the sake of everyone that visits this thread. Do we need to get a mod in here?

Let's not take this over board fellas and start a debate over one small comment. I'm not trying to be a mod here, but this board is meant for people with opinions and discussion about Criterion movies. It may have started out that way, but now it's delved into something entirely unnecessary and way above what is appropriate for a blu-ray.com forum thread. There is a line between discussing if there were "socialist" influences in a Godard film(s) and arguing about two conflicting ideals.

Thank you

I agree that there was no sign of EE on indoor scenes. However, on those outdoor scenes that I mentioned, the white "haloes" around characters and buildings are equally visible at both sides. If it was just a lighting effect, surely it would be concentrated on one side only? Also, a lighting effect would be visible on the objects/actors themselves, not around the perimeter.

Maybe I've misunderstood what EE looks like, but I'm still puzzled about these white haloes that are visible when people or objects are framed against a bright sky on the 'Days Of Heaven' BD (and DVD). They don't look like natural lighting effects to me. Does anyone recognise what I'm referring to?

Hey guys! Anyone can give me an idea of what The Killing Of A Chinese Bookie is like? Is a a gangster style movie? Those type of movies are not my type but it's the next one on my list of viewing and I am wondering if I should skip it or place it on my ZIP list?

it's the lens that malick's DP used. it diffuses the 'magic hour' lighting. next time around sunset. take your digital camera and take some pictures =). it's likely you'll get a similar effect. not the same exact (for that you'll need to get filter lenses that bring out the sun bouncing everywhere-effect). but similar.
