there is. when the dts ma bomb was an issue, the way to update the firmware was burning it to a disc and updating via optical. had to be a particular optical in and not every cd player worked. kinda of a pain but i was lucky with my equipment. onkyo was also particular on who they sent the firmware to. had to prove purchase. i dont think there is any firmware for the 705 since.

edit: if someone needs a copy, i may still have it somewhere

Yeah, I did update with the CD partial (DSP) firmware to fix the bitstream DTS bomb, but you apparently need an Onkyo dealer to update the main firmware (need special propriety device flash writer (jig) or dongle), which would mean I would be without my receiver for 6 weeks or more. No thanks.

I did this on my old 605 and it was a pain in the ass. I had to use several cd/dvd players before i could find one that would accept the signal.

If you're out of warranty you might be out of luck, or have to pay to get it done. But I would contact Onkyo support and they should refer you to a service repair center that can do it for you. If you have no complaints then let it go. The only thing that I was interested in was the improved HDMI handshake issues. My brother-in-law got a model a year after mine and has alot less time delays with the sync then mine. His firmware is 1.06 which is the last they did I believe. Mine was 1.04 I think. If you got an early release it might really be worth getting it done, since I know there were a few major fixes in 1.03 and 1.04. Just can't remember what they were.

interesting. ive had zero sync issues. ive had no issues with the receiver at all. the only complaint i had was with a ps3 firmware update made the receiver click a lot more than it did before. if anything i would just ugrade instead.
my firmware is 1.02

If Paramount is going the replacement disc route (as it now seems), hopefully they'll make the new discs blue instead of gray or something to easily distinguish them - the way the fixed Iron Man BDs were blue.

Well, I've encouraged them to go full color picture on it. Somehow I don't think it'll happen tho

An Army green color would be a nice touch.

Was just going to chime in with my SPR audio sync problems. Problem starts at about 2:04-2:05 when Matt Damon is talking about his brothers in the barn, continues and even worsens throughout the ensuing battle (e.g., when Tom Hanks shouts briefly to two of his men at approx. 2:13:30).

USA version
Panasonic DMP-BD60 player
Hooked up directly to my HDTV via HDMI cable, no receiver
BR's audio settings are set to "PCM" instead of "Bitstreaming"

Called Paramount's (TYPO FIXED) customer service number (a 323-number posted in another thread) and they collected my contact info and told me they'd be calling me back with more information/requesting more information. I asked if I should contact the merchant from whom I purchased the BR at this time (Amazon), and they said no.

Same thing here, regarding the SPR sync issues.

I have the Oppo-83 and run analog outs to an old non-HDMI Yamaha receiver, and I don't seem to be having the synce issue. HOWEVER, when I run audio bitstream thru optical out, the sync issue starts to happen.

I've only played the film a few minutes around that 2:05 mark so I'm not sure if the issue begins later on via analog out or not.

Why would you call Panasonic? It's Paramount you should have called.

Universal has taken a savage beating from many people recently due to less that stellar catalog bds including "Elizabeth", "Out of Africa", and now Spartacus.
In his review of the recent bd release of Elizabeth, Robert Harris has now called for Universal to stop issuing catalog blu-rays completely for the "sake of film".
my question is this--Is Universal aware of this recent barrage of criticism, and do they think there is anything that they are doing wrong with their bd transfers?
Or are they, in fact, confident they are absolutely putting forth the best effort they are capable of with these releases.
thanks in advance.

I really don't see how anyone can have an issue with Elizabeth, it's an outstanding Blu-ray.

well RAH is a very respected film archivist so I would think his opinion is pretty damn accurate.
he has commented on a number of poor releases over the past few years, and a number of reviewers have ended up amending their reviews to reflect his opinions.
Patton comes to mind immediately.
He was the one reviewer at the time who accurately discussed how waxy and unnatural looking it was due to excessive dnr.
Every other reviewer missed it, and raved about that release.
now, everyone regards that bd as one that should have been much better.
He is clearly able to discern problematic instances of excessive digital manipulation far better than almost any other blu-ray reviewer imo.

I was kinda confused about this one being mentioned too-- I've read nothing but stellar reviews of this release...
