YOU'RE TEARING ME APART LISA!

My fav scene is them underhanded throwing the football around laughing. No one throws like that. Very disturbing.

And if you're referring to US/Canadian consumers who would have imported SC's Breathless, and now won't because of the Criterion disc - again, completely minuscule in number, totally irrelevant to the bottom line.
Stop bringing down the fun.

This month's list of releases is the best single month I've seen yet.

As a year, the best I can recall. It's not even over yet. Chaplin. If only the War Trilogy, the silents and Dillinger was blu. But I can live with the fact.

I consider these films (both announced today, and previously discussed or rumored titles etc) to be "important" ones.... I don't really care who releases them, as long as they are accessible to me (currently region A only) and containing strong transfers with a good package (meaning supplements)

I don't mind that SC released Contempt or Breathless, or whatever...... I haven't seen them, so I can't comment on the transfer, but it's nice to see them being released at all....... but the transfers really deserve to be top-notch because the market for these films is people like us, who already own them in one form or another on DVD, not (although I'm sure it happens) to those who say "I see there is this movie called 'Breathless' that just got released.... never heard of it, perhaps I'll pick it up, people say it's good"

I agree, but I think Studio Canal/Lionsgate should prove they can release the best transfer they can (which from the looks of things, people don't think so.). Criterion has proven itself a great blu-ray releaser (is that a word?), so I would feel better to purchase Criterion's blu-ray of Breathless over Lionsgate (which won't happen because Studio Canal doesn't own U.S. releases on Breathless, Genius Entertainment does.).

Criterion does have a lot of critics due to their use of EE, but perhaps I'm fortunate in the fact that I rarely notice EE unless it's applied with a very thick brush........ (unlike DNR which my eyes instantly are drawn to, raining on many-a-parade )

Very true, but like you said, none of that bothers me one bit. Since Studio Canal did this Breathless restoration for the 50th anniversary, that is what we are going to get on the Criterion I hope.

Oh crap. Breathless might not have that awesome digipak that it's dvd had. The BD only shows 1 disc, which will fit in a plastic case. I hope they don't screw this up.

What a great month of releases.
Going to get Charade, Breathless, and Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence for sure. The eclipse looks interesting too, at least for a rent/watch.

Charade is awesome! It is one of the best Hitchcock-like films not made by Hitchcock. My wife loves Audrey and Cary Grant, and when she showed me this movie years ago, we make it a point to watch it at least once a year. Our version is some crappy no-name DVD with crappy pic and sound. We will FINALLY see it how it was meant to be seen!!

Out of the 4 titles, Charade is the one I am most excited about!!

Charade trivia: For Bond fans...the person responsible fo the majority of the Bond title sequences from Dr. No to Licence to Kill also is behind Charade's title sequence. Pretty hard not to notice if you're a Bond fan, IMO.

Hehe....that booklet that came with the DVD was a fantastic addition. It'll be interesting to see if it comes with the BD version.

And the light EE on SOME transfers is nothing compared to the crappy quality on SC's noisy transfers and inconsistent transfers.

Agreed. Always been a Audrey and Cary fan. Also Walter Matthau and James Coburn are great in it as well.

Is that list all the special features being released though. Because its rather short for Charade and also appears to be less about Charade then the director. Except the commentary of course.

I'll probably skip on a thin red line. I'm not much for war movies. Although I would jump if Criterion ever made a Full Metal Jacket BluRay release..

I can live with a clear case if it has the same color scheme for the package. A clear case but with the blue color on the back, red booklet, and the inside case picture this:

Whatever manipulation Criterion does to a transfer I believe they don't make the call on it. They are always working with someone very close to the project, director, cinematographer, etc. And if they respect their wishes even when there is an outcry from the public (The Last Emperor) I don't think they would just manipulate because they think it would be better. The person they are working with, I'm guessing, says they intended to have sharper edges here or less grain there.
