Aside from myself, the rest of my family (age ranges from 23-61) isn't extremely picky about PQ/AQ. My father loves watching Blu-rays, my mother and sister see a bit of difference but not enough to avoid watching a movie on DVD even if there is a BD release.

Three of my friends have BD players, the remaining 10 or so of them do not. They are all in their mid to late 20s, the so called "PS3 demographic" or whatever the term is to describe the video gaming people that want the "clean" look to movies that supposedly justifies the DNR in movies like Predator.

All of them have seen Blu-rays at my house, from the latest Pixar films to live-action movies like 3:10 to Yuma, Casino Royale, etc to movies with more pronounced grain like Minority Report or Quantum of Solace. I am running a 65" 1080i CRT projection TV with an HDMI connection. The picture is very sharp and detailed as a CRT should look, the grain is definitely visible.

Not a single person has ever complained about grain. One time I was at my friend's house and I explained to him why he should turn off the Vivid mode on his TV as he was washing out detail with excessive brightness and contrast when we were watching Speed on BD. This was also a good time to explain about film grain and DNR. He understood and agreed, but he was happy with 300 even before I explained this.

The response to people who normally don't watch BD movies ranges from astonishment (the typical response ) to "it looks better, but not enough to upgrade", but I have never heard a complaint or even a comment about grain, and I've never had to give the DNR talk to anyone aside from one of my friends.

So again I ask: if there is such a demand for DNR'd movies, why haven't I ever heard anyone complain about it? There are people on this forum who seem to think that way, but even here they are a minority.
Who is demanding that the studios release them like that? Just because some folks have no problem with it or find it better looking then a grainy transfer doesnt mean people are calling up studios and demanding that every bluray be released like that.

Just go to the customer reviews on Amazon. Unfortunately, they lump the reviews together for all the versions but you can tell especially if you look at the year. Or just do a search for Blu-Ray within the customer reviews. Almost all the reviews for the older edition say how terrible it looks. The DVD transfers were also never well recieved. Fox would surely see that.

I have a question. Hoping somebody can answer me. I've seen this movie hundreds of times. I grew up with it and have owned almost every version of the film except the Laserdisc

Here's the question: Whose blood or what is it that hits Blain on the side of the face when they're looking for Hawkins, right before he gets killed?

I'm assuming its Hawkins' blood.

Despite what this thread seems to show, a lot of us think things we don't post.

I personally tend to post the stuff I'm not thinking, it saves me the trouble of thinking about it later.

I assumed it was some type of stun weapon. Is this not true?

Ok, I don't mean this to be offensive, but you can't turn 120hz down. that's your displays refresh rate, it will always be at that number. It's not an effect. It just so happens that tru-motion and other frame interpolation features are available on displays that refresh at multiples of 24 like 96, 120, 240 ect.

For those that have not yet seen the Ultimate version and is leaning towards it, I HIGHLY suggest you rent it first. If you are not the kind of person that rents, then please trust the reviews. I watched it yesterday night and I tried to keep and open mind about it. I will go as far as saying that the beginning sequence didn't bother me as much as the unnatural motion effects somehow present in the new release. Its just outright distracting. I stopped criticizing the smooth faces and boosted contrast. I figured to each his own regarding what people consider clarity in high def but what some have touched upon that I need to convey even further is that with the new motion effects and unnatural look of the movie it really turned into a bad 80's TV pilot. For Predator fans who have seen this in the last 5 years in DVD or the original BD, it can really twist your fond memories of this movie.

Some say that the only problems are the screen shots presented. There are far worse scenes than that. I am not exaggerating when saying the part where Arnold is falling through the waterfall looks completely out of place and computer generated. What's happening here folks is that with all the campy dialog, over the top explosions with 80's stunt effects of people jumping from an explosion or falling back 10 feet from being shot by a rifle makes the whole movie a complete Cheesefest. Can excessive DNR or what ever they did make this movie I watched last week change this much? By no means am I saying Predator should look real and take this movie seriously but consider what I just said. The grittiness is all gone.

This thread is kept alive because its not about Fox adding DNR or double dipping with a version that is flawed. It really shows you that Blu-ray/High Def has a long way to go. It seems we are back to where it all began with home video again. Studios will crank out what ever they think will sell or what the people want. I really hope the only indication of this is just this one catalog release. If this is what the buying public wants than I need to skip a year or two from this format until the Avatar craze dies down.

I ask those that have voted for the Ultimate or still trying to champion this release but have yet to see it. Come back after watching it. NO the screen captures don't do justice. Its far far worse.

Honestly I have no idea. It's very possible. It seems like he just gets nailed in the side of the face with something, then BOOM!!! Laser through the chest.

I figured that the Predator did not want that mini-gun pointed in his direction so he hit Blaine with some type of stun weapon so that he wouldn't be able to aim properly.

I'm assuming its Hawkins' blood.
Blaine heard a noise and looked down and saw a small animal. He turned his head and got hit with the blood. I assumed the Predator shot the animal for some reason, Blaine got hit with the blood. Then the Predator proceeded to shoot Blaine. It has always confused me as well.

Agree with Cliff, that most of the problems comes from the source. I happen to like the new version, warts and all. It doesn't mean it's perfect (ie WARTS AND ALL). At least people can choose between the two disc according to their tastes.

@Robert Harris, I agree with you, I just tend to think that there's a whole generalisation (like DNR is EVIL!) coming from posters, when each film present it's own set of kinks when it comes to HD transferts.
