I guess he could be right, we might skip the 3 to 1 ratio and go straight to 4 to 1. Friday's numbers are going to be interesting.

Toshiba has other ways to win money so why make the consumer the loser any longer?
If you read comments made by Sony's CEO, Mr. Stringer, you will find out that it all has to do with saving face. We are talking about a culture that used to accept suicide as a way of getting your honor back if you lost a battle. So, the public's opinion of you is still highly important to that culture and Toshiba reps are trying to save face in the eyes of the public. In other words, the consumer is way down the list of importance to Toshiba...

Three more Chinese players were were shown at CEDIA today, bringing the total of HD DVD players coming to market before the holidays to TEN, from 7 different brands. Many of these players will be selling for under $200 - I think Sony knows this was their only chance to claim a hardware sales "victory" before they are utterly swamped.

Can't wait to hear the cries of the HD DVD fanboys this week. "But they don't count Wal-Mart so those numbers aren't accurate!" Again. Wal-Mart is probably running behind Target at selling any Hi Def Media. None of the Wal-Marts I have ever been in have a good stock of anything. Maybe a couple of each for 10 to 15 titles. Give me a break. These guys keep thinking that their numbers are going to be getting better. When are they going to realize that it ain't happening. As for those players by other companies in that post with the link above...as I remember, there were no other HD DVD player announcements at CEDIA besides Toshiba. Lies? I think so.

All the Wal-mart's around here are stocking 3-1 in favor of Blu-ray... I've checked four of them. They wouldn't be doing that if HD DVD was selling better now would they?

About the rdjam comment, I thought it was illegal to discuss Nielson's on AVS now? Or has he moved somewhere else?

Thank you for causing me to do more research on the real numbers on discs sold.
After some research from what I've been able to gather from several unbiased sources it seems,

The Paramount 190,000 Transformers HD DVD sales probably including sold discs to overseas buyers and wholesalers (fudging the numbers but maybe not actually a lie).

From what the several sources I found the real number would be 137,417 here in North America/Canada. The number was arrived at by taking the Nielsen number of 89,871 and it is said that the Nielsen number is 65.4% of the HD disc market so using that number and adding the other percentage it makes 137,417 or as close as possible.

They gave the sold number for the Blu-Ray 300 DVD as 177,559 sold in the first week using the same method of adding the Nielsen number 107,351 at 65.4% of the market then add the remaining percentage.

So I would guess the best selling high definition DVD is the Blu-Ray 300 disc then the HD DVD Transformers disc and then Blu-Ray Spiderman 3 disc at 135,000 sold.

With the expansion of the formats , I suspect the those numbers will soon fall to new releases soon on the market (maybe Ratatouille?)

I think those comments were before the AVS breakdown.

I have a new theory about Toshiba's strategy. Of course, they are losing money on HD-DVD, so why continue? My answer: In order to protect their DVD cash cow. If they can delay Blu-Ray adoption, it extends the sales of DVD, which as I understand they take considerable royalties from.

Killing DVD is checkmate. HD-DVD is just a pawn protecting Toshiba's king (DVD).

So, I will not buy any more DVD even for movies that aren't available on Blu-ray. I'm tired of Toshiba.

So, just start ignoring him...he'll finally get a clue that you need links for each finding and they shouldn't be on a biased site like AVS, Blu-ray.com, etc.

I think you got that backwards. DVD revenue has been sliding the entire year. It was flat last year. EVERYONE can see a trend.....that is DVD is in the decline. With or without a highdef format the DVD format has maxed out and the only way to go is down.

That's why it's important to all stuidos and manufactures that this format doesn't die. It's a way to offset the declining DVD sales and lead them to the new golden age.

Killing the highdef format IMO wouldn't be in anyones best intrest except MS.

Sure, except that Toshiba gets money from DVD and nothing from Blu-ray. Even if DVD is in decline, Toshiba needs to slow that decline and one way is to slow Blu-ray adoption.

This is also why they would pay so much money for studio exclusivity. Of course, they lose money on the HD-DVD side, but a lot of us probably buy the DVD version which gives some of that loss back to them.

Not anymore; not from me.

Yeah, I know I just decided to ignore him, which I think all of us should just do. Congratulations! He is the first person I have ever put on my ignore list!

I'm sorry but you got that wrong again (well in my opinion). Toshiba will not slow down the decline in DVD by killing Bluray adoption. It's the natural order of things. DVD has been flat/in decline before anyone owned a Bluray player. It probably has to do with slashing of prices over the years. In the short term some studios made a TON of money on these dump bins you see in most retailers (like Wal-mart) however the effect isn't felt for years. Right now you are seeing the effect of marking down DVD's so low Rev starts to slide. Eventually people own the movies they want and prices are dirt cheap.....the only way to go is down.

Toshibas best chance to keep their royalties is win this format war.
