The Thin Red Line - 5/5
Fantastic film. About 45 minutes or so into it, I still wasn't sure how I felt about it. The same thing happened to me with 2001: ASO and Days of Heaven and the WOW hit me at the end. Well the WOW hit me about half way through the film. I rarely watch my favorite films more than once or twice a year, but I almost restarted this as soon as it ended. I can't wait to watch it again! It's late so here's a few random thoughts... Malick starts with showing us a tribal culture - displaying their peaceful, natural, simple way of life. Then we're introduced to the American military as they're being sent off to war. Malick showcases the violent, ugly nature of war intermingled with beautiful shots of nature. There were a couple of shots that stood out for me, but the one I can recall right now was after a soldier burned a hooch, the camera zooms in on a single flower, alone in front of the burning structure. Later on, we witness fighting among the tribal peoples and human skulls visible on shelves in their huts. He shows us how peaceful, yet "savage" they are as well, and that is what's inherently natural for us. We obviously know that the peoples of modern society are very civilized and don't keep skulls in their house, however our skirmishes yield a thousand times more casualties and destruction. The narration, themes, performances, absolutely stunning cinematography and the realistic, in your face combat sequences all make for one of the best films I've ever seen and one of the finest blu's I've had the pleasure of viewing. I can't wait for Barnes and Noble's Criterion sale in November!! |

![]() I also can't wait to get Iron Man 2. I liked it a lot when I saw it in theaters! If you can, definitely wait to watch it on your setup at home! The soundtrack alone is worth it, but the film is too beautiful to be properly viewed on a smaller monitor ![]() |

Event Horizon
Director: Paul Anderson Writer: Philip Eisner Mains: Laurence Fishburne, Sam Neill, Kathleen Quinlan Average Sci Fi Thiller First off i would like to state that this isnt a bash just my opinion on the movie. I thought the ideal was pretty cool and the visuals were amazing. Especially for a movie this darn old. Acting was pretty average and direction, basically everything. I dont know if me seeing movies like "Sunshine" or "Pandorum" have an affect on the overall rating of this movie. I just seem to like those movies a bit more. I also felt like this movie had allot of holes in the plot, maybe they rushed it being that its only 93 mins. Overall i thought the movie was ok and worth a rental. Rent It First 3/5 |

It looks like this is one of my next greatest rentals, so now I can't wait to see it!
![]() This one is one of my favorites, and it certainly creeped me out when I first saw it, but I can understand it being seen as average or dull. Certainly doesn't compare to "Sunshine." If only the "Doom" movie had this same production style/design... ![]() |

In Walkabout, they swim in water, that rests on dirt, bathed by the sun, naked. Pretty heavy stuff eh? Now I realize just how deep that film really is. It represents the meaning of all that is, ever was, and will ever be. ![]() ![]() |

Up in the Air
finally got around to seeing this. and while i really enjoyed it, i'm glad i didn't buy it because i'd probably only watch it every so often. and while George Clooney plays a terrific character that is essential me, and of course that means i could connect with him, everyone else i didn't really care when they were on screen. very original as Clooney plays Ryan Bingham, a corporate downsizer who flies from city to city laying people off from their jobs because, as Ryan puts it, their bosses are "p*ssies who don't have the stones to do it themselves" ![]() ![]() the relationship Bingham builds with Alex (Vera Farmiga) is well crafted and built on the exact same things: wealth, and essentially greed. they both are prime club members in an assortment of different companies most common folk have never even heard of, and that's where the attraction lies for these two characters. while i never really had any issues with the film, i wasn't sucked into it like i wanted to be. and again, aside from Clooney, i didn't care to learn about other characters. i just wanted to continue to see Ryan living his life the way he should - in hotels, airplanes, and rental cars. and i enjoyed the hell out of the ending. most films have the character learn something or change... ![]() 4/5 |
