Desktop PC HELP!!!

Hey guys, I recently ran into a problem with a computer of mine. I have an older model HP desktop PC with a partitioned hard-drive that includes XP Home as the OS along with the nonsense default software that comes along with it. Anyways, I decided that I wanted to perform a destructive recovery not using the traditional F8 button, but via inserting the XP Home Edition w/SP2 CD and installing it that way. Therefore, I proceeded with the installation and installed the fresh XP Home OS over the partitioned portion of the hard-drive (it gave a warning, but I went ahead anyways), and everything went smoothly. Then the system restarted to finish the install and this is where my problem occurred. After the HP logo popped up, a black screen came on saying "error with OS." I even tried to insert the XP Home OS CD into the DVD drive and it won't even read. The only thing I can do with the system is press the on/off button and it works. Otherwise, nothing else happens. Is there a way to recover the original XP Home? Will the recovery disc help out here because I definitely do not have them (probably have to order them from HP) even though I wiped out the partitioned space? Do I need a new hard-drive? Thanks.
