(1) Star Wars: A New Hope - the scene
[Show spoiler]where Luke is watching the double-star sunset after learning that he has to once again postpone leaving his life on the farm.
That scene precisely summed up the feeling of loneliness and powerless nature of youth that yearns for a happy future, but is constrained by a hopeless current situation.

(2) Jaws - the scene where
[Show spoiler]Chief Brody is sadly setting at his table after being confronted by the woman whose son was killed by a shark.
It reminded me that one will eventually emerge from moments of deepest despair, as Brody did when his son, and eventually Richard Dreyfuss, cheered him up.

(3) LotR - The Return of the King - the scene where
[Show spoiler]Frodo and Sam are rescued by the eagles while awaiting their apparent death on Mount Doom.
The combination of situation, scenery, and music create the most dream-like sequence that I can remember seeing in a film.

(4) Close Encounters of the Third Kind -
[Show spoiler]Richard Dreyfuss is depondently building Devil's Tower in the den of his house after his wife leaves with his children
. Another well depicted moment of utter despair and loneliness, the moment after one has lost everything that they valued in life while experiencing the mental anguish of pursuing a seemingly unattainable (and unknowable) goal.

(5) 2001 -
[Show spoiler] the very last seen with the Star Child slowly turning its eyes to face the audience.
The most dramatic statement I have ever seen that perfectly sums up the basic reality of life: you don't know your purpose or why you are here, but you have just enough intelligence to know that life (although strangely wonderful) is an unsolvable mystery - and you will never understand the meaning of existence.
