(1) Star Wars: A New Hope - the scene
[Show spoiler] That scene precisely summed up the feeling of loneliness and powerless nature of youth that yearns for a happy future, but is constrained by a hopeless current situation.(2) Jaws - the scene where [Show spoiler] It reminded me that one will eventually emerge from moments of deepest despair, as Brody did when his son, and eventually Richard Dreyfuss, cheered him up.(3) LotR - The Return of the King - the scene where [Show spoiler] The combination of situation, scenery, and music create the most dream-like sequence that I can remember seeing in a film.(4) Close Encounters of the Third Kind - [Show spoiler] . Another well depicted moment of utter despair and loneliness, the moment after one has lost everything that they valued in life while experiencing the mental anguish of pursuing a seemingly unattainable (and unknowable) goal.(5) 2001 - [Show spoiler] The most dramatic statement I have ever seen that perfectly sums up the basic reality of life: you don't know your purpose or why you are here, but you have just enough intelligence to know that life (although strangely wonderful) is an unsolvable mystery - and you will never understand the meaning of existence.
