Isn't Bourne next week? Don't we have a BOGO starting up now? Currently at Amazon and starting soon at Best Buy?

To put things in perspective, combined US box office of the HD DVD releases of the week vs the Blu Ray ones

HD DVD (Anchorman, Hot Rod, Old School, Bean's Holidays): $174.5 M
Blu Ray (I know who killed me, Paprika) : $7.9M

P.S: Paprika, niche because anime, is brilliant btw, imho by en large the best of all the movies listed previously, with my apologies to fans of Will Ferrel and Rowan Atkinson.

I disagree. Realistically I expect Pirates 3 to do Spidey 3 numbers (around 30,000 for week 2) and BU to do TF numbers (around 100,000 week 1). I think Potter will do 75k on HD DVD side but do double that on Blu-ray.

So, IMO, Pirates (wk.2) + Potter = BU + Potter.

The residual catalogue should swing the week for Blu-ray.

However, the volumes could (should) be significantly bigger than I have suggested above, for two reasons:

1) Many more players - lots of cheap HD DVD players ( ) and loads of PS3's + a few thousand BD standalones of course ( ).

2) Closer to Christmas so present buying time will be hitting fever pitch.

Potter has the potential to top 200k on Blu-ray.

So Ookie.., care to reveal what you saw than few others did?

Incidentally, the only chance I see for HD DVD to get close is BU week. Who knows what offers are in the works for that one.
It is not really about seeing anything.
It was the weakest week for blu in quite a while, and if hd was going to do anything it would have been the week to do it.
There were various "hd buy days" set for the week which never really amount to anything but I know if I were hd-dvd that would have been the week I chose to throw everything I had out there.
Blu is bulletproof for the rest of the year and gods know how long after that.
And for the record, I was definitely not the only person to see that week as a risky one.

Right on! So given that, HD-DVD losing by the margin is big time smackdown!

I think Bourne will have a big week 2, but I think in alot of situations next week for hd-dvd owners it will be a choice between Potter and Bourne and the kids will win that most of the time especially with funds limited due to xmas shopping.

The Amazon BOGO is Warner. So what does that mean?

OK, good call in that case!

HD DVD do seem to be doing a lot of crazy offers at the moment. Imagine if they tie in a week where they sell 50,000 of their $100 players and get 5 movies scanned at checkout for each player sale? That's 250k units Blu-ray has to beat.

It's hard for studios to clearly assess the market when the waters are muddied by crazy giveaway deals (and the BDA aren't blameless in this area).

Which is exactly what the MS/Toshiba alliance wants. Always remember that the objective of MS/Toshiba is to stop Blu-ray becoming mainstream. If all they have to do to achieve that is give away a few hundred million bucks worth of players/movies each year they'll thrilled.

Meanwhile the studios will have lost billions of potential future revenue. I'm still not entirely clear what the benefit is to the HD DVD supporting studios of losing billions of dollars. Maybe they'll explain it some day.

It likely means that Warner is happy to promote Blu-ray and do their part. And possibly that they're finally willing to give Blu some advantages.

Although isn't there a Warner BOGO on HD DVD too? It's just their BOGOs don't do as well as ours

Right now, honestly, Warner is the only company that matters.

Toshiba (and Blu for that matter) giveaways can not affect the numbers they are seeing coming down the pipeline.

Blu-Rays recently have been average about 1.65:1 for Warner titles (62:38 in Neilson's styling).

Ah, but none of those HD DVD titles were blockbusters. None of them even made the HD DVD top ten.

Not big day and dates, but interesting catalouge titles with nothing on Blu-ray, bang in the middle of big Black Friday, and Superbad/POTC3 weeks for Blu-ray.

Really a nothing week.

Edit, missed out Bean and Hot Rod, they're day and dates aren't they?

I'm sure they've saved up for both.

Bourne will sell very very well. One of the best reviewed films of the year, and it will be a good fit for the "HD" demographic.

Both the Bourne single disc and 3 pack are outranking the Potters on the Amazon HD DVD charts. (Outranking Blu Ray Potters too).

This one will be close.

Don't be, we didn't have any new releases. And they had the planet earth surge(due to UK buyers and OPRAH). We will never lose a week.

and for those of you worried about bourne.

Bourne aint shit cuz we gots a BOGO plus our 2:1 harry potter sales.
Even without 2:1 bp, a Best Buy bogo will alone defeat bourne. If a bogo can beat transformers, then COMEON.

Both "Anchorman" and "Old School" were hits here in North America, but Mr. Bean's Holiday didn't do so good here, however it did quite well in Europe.

Though I don't expect any of them to sell a lot of copies since these are catalog titles. Mr. Bean's Holiday is the only new release but probably won't do great.
