You also see a whole lot of the real Charlotte Gainsbourg. One can see why she won Best Actress at Cannes; it is such a vulnerable (or, invulnerable) performance.

Definitely. I think there's so much to admire about the film, but that's what makes it incredibly frustrating when it doesn't come together in an entirely cohesive manner from time to time. In any case, I think the incredible PQ and AQ, the supplements along with the parts of the film I do love, were worth getting for $20. I'll just have to grin and bear it when the parts I don't like so much come up.

I started The Last Emperor tonight after picking it up earlier in the week. I've watched this before either in parts or in whole (it was in a world cultures class during high school, and I think we dedicated two days to it... but the movie is long) and didn't really have fond memories of it. But 10 years since then my tastes in life have changed a lot so I was definitely willing to give it a second chance.

It is much more palpable from the get-go than I remembered, although I did stop it at just after an hour to give myself a breather. I'll pick it back up again tomorrow. The one thing that is really annoying me (especially at first, though I haven't stopped noticing it) is the use of English rather than Chinese. I suppose that if a director wants an audience outside of arthouse-style theaters, English has to be the spoken language...and overdubs are bad news from the get-go. Still, the idea of all of these non-Americans speaking fluent English... well, it is a bit distracting.

Well for me, I'm not caught up in the Malick lovefest (I DO ENJOY his films though.). But I don't really understand the reason why you think people should love Days of Heaven. Maybe some people don't like things that is just liked because Malick made it. Also, I don't think there is a lack of love for it. Malick is up at the top with Kurosawa on this board as the most loved, which isn't a surprise. Popularity=Fame=lovefest on who the best is. Which kind of off-topic, I feel sorry for all of the directors out there that is ignored because the wheel of fame keeps spinning out the "best" lists. Kind of like the rich gets richer and the poor gets poorer. The most talked about gets all of the attention (and the "best director ever, even though I don't know every director out there" titles), while the less acknowledged keeps getting ignored.

But back to "lack of love for something". It's just taste man. Will I get blasted for saying I don't like Inception? Well how stupid of me to say that. Inception is loved by millions (btw, I wonder if that has anything to do with him making The Dark Knight? Hmmm.), so I SHOULD love it too, because Nolan made it, and only for that reason I should love it.

I see the same with "lack of love". Stuff like "Pierrot le fou sucks. I didn't understand it!". Well, time to go watch Inception. NOLAN ROCKS!

.
Except that nothing about Malick is "famous". He doesn't give interviews, he is hardly ever "seen"... He's popular because his films are that good, and are consistently mesmerizing if not always a "cohesive" whole. Godard's films were never cohesive and rarely had one unifying theme, but you love his work because it speaks to you the strongest. Malick speaks to a great dela of others. So does Kurosawa, Bergman, Rohmer, and, much to my chagrin, Tarantino. The best are the best because they have stood the test of time and generation after generation re-visit their work and still find relevance.

You seem to think Godard is the "best director" (or at least your favorite) out there but I'm sure you don't know every director either... so how does that work exactly? It's ok for you but not for others? Or, it's okay for you to have an opinion but not okay for the rest of us? Just curious.

The Thin Red Line isn't popular? I'm not talking about just the person. If someone is liked because of a movie being nothing more than an alternate to Saving Private Ryan to some people (and I see that being true on alot of forums), then what credit is that?

First, since you are responding to a comment I made to another posters' "I don't understand why people don't like this movie" just to bring up Godard like you seem to always do with me, I'll say this:

He is my fav!

2nd, and the poster was clearly saying, he doesn't understand why a movie he loves isn't loved by everyone. I said it's because of taste. I did go off-topic on fame=best and yes, that does go to Godard too. You got me.I don't know what you won, but you did. I like a famous director in Godard. How dare I defend lesser known directors then!

3rd, the "but I'm sure you don't know every director either" is where your wrong. I am against lists and "best". So I don't need to know them all. If you put down lists of "best movies/directors" instead of "FAV movies/directors", then you better seen them all. And I haven't, so you have no room to talk down to me like that because I don't walk around with "Best lists" like so many on here do. There is a difference between Best and Fav.

What does that have to do with anything I or that poster said? I'll play,

No! No one should have an opinion. I don't understand why people don't like Days of Heaven. That didn't come from me. It's just like you love to end everything you quote of mine with a little question to p*ss me off. Did I do something to you on here, because I have been seeing everytime you quote me you include things I talked about in past posts of mine that has nothing to do with the subject at hand. I like Godard. I have opinions that people don't like. Yet I never said no one else has an opinion. But I still get these questions from you.

Hah, good point, but TRS transcends PQ! So I opted to ask her to marry me. Too forward?

Does anyone know how long it takes B&N to ship its items when it says shipping in 1-2 weeks?
And how long it takes for packages to arrive once they are shipped?

Thanks.

CG likes to play the favourite vs. best argument because he can't defend why he likes something apart from the fact that others don't.

We can all play that game! Tommy Wisseau's 'The Room' is good because I like it. DISCUSS.

Anyone else take advantage of the B&N sale on to have certain titles cancelled from their order without explanation?

So far from the B&N sale I've gotten Antichrist, The Thin Red Line and A Christmas Tale all on blu-ray, plus the Larisa Shepitko Eclipse set. Definitely be picking up Modern Times (on blu) and most likely Patriotism next week.

If you guys love Charlotte Gainsbourg, I'm hoping KINO (who released it on DVD), Criterion or someone will release "Happily Ever After" on Blu-ray. It's an awesome French film that deals with relationships...especially from the male perspective. Hehe... The radiohead segment of "Creep" with her and Johnny Depp was just awesome! Hell, if you have Netflix...watch this film!!!
