as a rule of thumb buy the best amplifier you can afford too many watts is better than to little your ears will give out before those studio 100s if you can afford the xpa1s go for it you won't regret it

I have the same speakers as you do, so far I'm liking the UPA-1's. The 100's and the 690 seem like they could easily take more power but the small monoblocks push them nicely. I think the difference is peak and RMS wattage, but again I wouldn't get too hung up on those numbers, your ears will give out before anything else. Have you been looking into Emo amps or another brand? I had an Anthem before the Emo's and it didn't match up with my Pioneer very well, the Emo's work much better with my SC-07. How many channels do you want the amp to have?

I don't see why that matters so much, Paradigm says suitable amplifier power 15-350w. Speakers can take alot more power than there ratings as long as it's clean undistorted power. I've had my 100's hooked up to my friends Anthem P-5 before ( 325 x 5 ) and we gave the 100's everything that the amp had. They handled it no problem. Another example is I'm using some Atom Monitor's for surround backs, they're 50w speakers and I'm running them with 125wpc and they're fine. So go by the assumption that RMS is 230w, peak 350w, call Paradigm and ask them if you really need to know. Now it's my turn to sound like a broken record, don't worry about those numbers so much. Your speakers have enough power handling to take just about whatever you throw at them. You'll be pleased with the results of adding a power amp, I've found the more power the better. Ryan Peddle is bi-amping his 100's with his NAD amp, his NAD measures at 200wpc, so he's running 400w through his 100's and he's not having any troubles. What amp are you thinking of buying?

The M25 is pushing at least 200 wpc by non NAD ratings, it is probably more in line with 250wpc under everyone elses ratings. I am bi amping my 100s. So for arguement sakes, I am providing 320wpc NAD power to my 100s, and close to 500wpc everyone elses ratings.

The key thing to remember...the speaker will only draw what it really needs. I was concerned with biamping my 100s with such power in the beginning. I called my Paradigm tech guy, Piero, and had a chat. I was more concerned with the tweeter. Basically, when you biamp the 100s you are separating the tweeter from the rest of the drivers. I was concerned that the tweeter would simply fry. It is SOOOOO no the case. My speakers sound absolutely phenomenal. Very very open, with deep, tight, very well defined bass.

CC690 should be in the house this week or next...then onto the ADP590s. Then the last holdout will be the second sub. (decided to keep the Sub12 after a really bad experience with a prospective purchaser)

That's awesome Ryan, you'll love the 690 although I'm sure you've heard it before. I tried using my Studio 20's with the Anthem amp that I had and they sounded great and had no trouble with 225wpc. That's too bad about selling the sub but I don't think you'll be that hard done by with dual Sub 12's, it's a great sub. I've been debating on switching out my Atom Monitor v6 for some Studio 10's as surround backs, do you think there's much point in doing that? The Atom's need a higher crossover than 80hz, my Pioneer has a global crossover, so they sound somewhat muddy with some content. I'm just not sure yet because there isn't alot of content going through them.

Thumbs up

Ace and Ryan, thank you guys for helping me undrstand a little better. My reason for asking is i wanted to know the exact true power these speakers can handle, thus RMS! So I came to the conclusion that I will be looking at Bryston, Emo, and Nad. Thx again guys...Ace, where's the pics?

Here's an old pic, things have changed since then. I've just been to lazy to take new pics and put together a gallery to be honest. I've got a few more changes coming before X-Mas, after they have arrived and are setup I'll take some new pics.

I have the SC-07 and it's really lacking in the 4ohm region, so I know what your hearing and I wasn't impressed either. The 100's are rated for eight ohms but have some pretty big impedance swings which require current. What amps are you looking at?
hahaha....

My Sony has been running my 4 ohm speakers just fine... hahahahahahaha LOL!

To bad your Pioneer cant do the same.

Gato,

If you can afford (used or new) Bryston, simply put, do it!
Pick up a 4bsst, you will not regret it.

Listen to whatever you like, how ever you like it. It's your system not anyone else's. That should be a sweet setup. Did you trade in your Monitor's?
