Dances with Wolves Blu-ray Review
Kevin Costner’s Americana epic sweeps magnificently onto Blu-ray.
Reviewed by Casey Broadwater, January 10, 2011

Both are three hour-plus epics, both contain action and capital-R-Romance in equal measure, and both are about a white American soldier "going native" and betraying his own race for the sake of justice, rightness, freedom, and love. So, why is it that James Cameron's Avatar feels like a plasticine platitude, while Kevin Costner's Dances with Wolves—even 20 years after its release—still seems genuine and wide-eyed, an honest statement about a regrettable period in U.S. history? I think it all comes down to ambition. Cameron's film toted itself as a landmark leap forward in motion capture and the near-seamless blending of live-action cinematography and CGI—which it was and is—but its story is severely underwritten and overprocessed, cobbled together piecemeal from various anti-imperialist parables, including Dancing with Wolves. Compared to the years of research and development devoted to the film's technological innovations, its script feels like an afterthought, an unfortunate necessity

to Mr. Broadwater, for he speaketh the truth.

Well, there's nothing wrong with the Theatrical Cut, especially for the first viewing. I just prefer the film without the voice-over narrative.

I kind of agree with Casey BUT Dances with Wolves is a lot harder to watch, Avatar is a lot more light-hearted and gives you a more fulfilling ending. Dances with Wolves may be the better movie, Avatar is the more fun one to watch, I think partially proven by the fact that my nieces and nephews enjoy it a lot.

They're 5, 3 and 1 so no, not yet. Doubt they'll be seeing it any time soon either unless they watch it with me.

Its playing 45 miles from me in Spokane, which is no biggy to me. In the Summer I would have been there on opening night. But this time of year the heavily traveled freeway is an ice rink, infamous for mega sized multi car pile ups. There was one earlier this year with 600 cars. I sh!t you not. Law enforcement and emergency services were so overwhelmed they just took a "Let God sort 'em out" attitude. It was 2 degrees when I got up this morning and the world looked very shiney. If the weather lets up I'll make the drive.

That's crazy. It's in the twenties here in Texas, but bright and sunny. I had to take a walk as soon as i left Black Swan to chill out. Jesus dude. I don't know what to say about that movie.

they might surprise you. Weird how we think it's okay to let kids watch PG-13 movies as long as they're bright and shiney, but i think sometimes they can appreciate the cinematography of a "slower" movie more than we think. Do we shy away from letting them see stuff that really happened, as opposed to things that are obviously fictional? These are the ponderous thoughts of a parent that just took his, soon to be, 10 year old son to see "True Grit."

Tell me more about how the film affected you. What emotions did it evoke?

can't really compare the two since they haven't seen Dances with Wolves.

and do they like the "story" () of Avatar, or just the bright shiny colors and whatnot like any 5 year old, 3 year old and 1 year old would?

Complete tension is what i felt for the entire movie. You are never really allowed to relax. I was surprised by how "physical" the movie was. I had tears streaming down my face by the end. Not because it was so sad, even though it is tragic, but because it just builds, and builds, and builds until I almost couldn't take it. It's probably the most visceral movie i've ever seen. Personally, i think it blows The Fountain to pieces. I don't know if i could watch it again. Weird, huh? Probably my favorite movie of the year and i don't wanna see it again, but i do, but i don't. I'm going insaaaaannne.

I definitely want an audio bluray of "Swan Lake" though. Never realized how awesome that piece is.
