I am glad you liked it. I thought it was great too.

I have to ask about the bolded though. Why?

Since you agree with me...I agree with you

I don't know why honestly, for some reason he just didn't sit well with me as a Captain.

It's really good guys. An excellent depiction of PTSD. Maybe too real.

Acting is fantastic.

Of course it didn’t, but that’s what should be expected from this hyper-unique and stylish movie. That’s right, stylish! Is that still a bad word? Not here...not in my books. Scott Pilgrim isn’t style over substance, but rather style to compliment, and even enhance, substance.

There is a simple, timeless message bubbling under surface of this hybrid drama-comedy-action-comic-video game-music video. This movie oozes quirky geekery, something that has had a welcome resurgence following untold decades dominated by testosterone fuelled bravado. Big Bang Theory fans should feel right at home here. It’s a relentlessly paced movie that flys by in the blink of any eye. Completely unpretentious in its telling of the classic “boy meets girl...boy looses girl... boy fights to the death for girl” story arc.

I found all technical aspects of this movie pleasing. Solid acting, directing, editing, production, and effects. The BD is at or near reference.

I am actually not a gamer. I was worried going in that that fact would be a liability; apparently not. You just have to go into it for a fun romp through current American youth culture and hold on tight. I’m sure I would have gotten even more out of the film had I known the origins of the (plethora of) gaming references included. However, it seems that these references were obvious enough to recognize to enjoy their use on my level.

Overall I will give this a 4.5/5. Kudos for originality.

If this movie were a food it would be...

[Show spoiler]

Fresh, caffeine fueled, organic, vegan, fair trade.
Damnit. I had comfortably pre-judged and written this thing off. Dismissed despite the reviews. Now I have to give it a try.

Marketed as a comedy, much like The Break Up, but both films focus more on the drama and neither are successful. The comedic moments are few and far between--Kevin James actually has zero funny parts, and he's at tremendously talented comedic actor. As for the drama and the purpose of the film, it's completely underdeveloped. The film doesn't know what it wants to be.

Check out how different the ranking and grades are between the different services. A captain in the Marines is a lot different than a captain in the Navy for example. You can be really young and make captain in the Marines.

[Show spoiler]Rank equivalency between servicesDue to the ambiguity created by the common use of "captain" for officers of different grades between the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, equivalency is conferred between officers by use of identical pay grade rather than title of rank. The higher the grade, the higher the rank of the officer. For example, an Army, Air Force, or Marine captain is equivalent in rank, responsibilities, and grade to a Navy or Coast Guard lieutenant, all of which are of the third officer grade, or O-3. Similarly, a Navy or Coast Guard captain is equivalent in rank, responsibilities, and grade to an Army, Air Force, or Marine colonel, all of which are of the sixth officer grade, or O-6. Thus, Army, Air Force, and Marine colonels together with Navy and Coast Guard captains wear the silver eagle insignia of the grade of O-6, while Army, Air Force, and Marine captains together with Navy and Coast Guard lieutenants wear the double silver bars of the rank insignia of the grade of O-3. Additionally, the O-6 rank of Navy and Coast Guard captain is abbreviated as uppercase "CAPT", while the O-3 rank of captain is abbreviated as "CPT" for the Army and lowercase "Capt" for the Air Force and Marine Corps.

And there is a really cool chart here that shows the differences.

Another year (Theater)

Where to start? This movie is so depressing that they should have suicide watch in the theater. It was excruciating to endure this drivel for two and a half hour.I bet that if they screened this in a prison, they would get accused for torturing the prisoners!I could go on,but will spare you the invectives which this movie thoroughly deserves.Acting is good, but thats all this turd is good for.I strongly advice against seeing this movie,I really do.And it's not that I'm against british social realism movies, but there must be a somewhat coherent story with a point to it.Storywise the more dimentions to characters the better.Others have said the characters lacked in both depth and humanity, and I agree with that.

Movie:0/5 (If one could give negative points here I would)

Signing off to get some prozac

Ha ha, pre-judger! Honestly Squid, give it a try, although I'm not comfortable giving you odds on this one. Expectations are important here, so don't go in expecting Michael Cera's version of Black Swan; but it is a damn fun movie to lose yourself in for a couple of hours. I give many points away for originality since it seems we are so starved for it these days. For what this movie set out to achieve, it did it very very well.

That's pretty sweet. I've always been confused by ranks and such. Now please, someone break down platoon, regiment, division, etc. I have never been able to get my head around all that nonsense.

Interesting...that helps a lot

I suppose I was associating Captain with a more senior officer than it actually is.

Today's first movie:

The Time Machine

  • 2002 | PG-13 | 96 Minutes

  • Director: Simon Wells

  • Starring: Guy Pearce

  • Sci-Fi | Adventure | Action

  • First Time Viewing

Pearce plays a scientist from at the end of the 19th century who experiences the loss of someone he loves early in the film and then devotes himself for several years to creating a time machine to be able to go back and undo what was done. On his trips through time he is inadvertently transported 800,000 years into the future where humans are now evolved into two distinct races: the ones like us and the ones who are "monsters" that live underground and hunt the "regular" people for food.

The movie is mildly entertaining but by no means much more than "okay".

There's some definite problems with the time travel stuff (there's no way
[Show spoiler]those carvings would be that well preserved...or preserved at all...
after 800,000 years) but how many time travel movies don't?

The movie is quite short and the story is pretty bland once he gets to the future
[Show spoiler]"hey people...oh no they took the girl...I'm going to get her back...hey is that Scar?!...I'm staying."
It would have been nice if the storyline of the film was more inspired and successfully made me care about Pearce's character or the few other ones and what happens to them. But it didn't.

Pearce is good in his role with what he has to work with and Jeremy Irons is always a good "go to" guy for a character who needs an awesomely evil voice.

I also liked Orlando Jones because he was quite funny a few times.

If its on TV and your interested, check it out, it may keep you entertained for a little over an hour and a half like it did for me. But don't expect much more beyond that.

Rating - 3/5

Definitely aimed at adolescent teens but I still had a blast. You might end up impressed like I was if you can get over that aspect.
