Default Couple of newbie questions

Hi, first post here.

Wife gave me a PS3 for my birthday today, which we intend to use primarily as a Blu-Ray player for our 60" Sony SXRD (basically a DLP television, in case you're not familiar). I popped in the "Spiderman 3" Blu-Ray that came with the console, and the picture is phenomenal.

A few questions, after browsing here (and a few other forums) for about an hour:

1. I've read some things about differences in transfer quality on some Blu-Ray discs. Is there a difference in some discs? Is there a list somewhere or an easy way to determine which discs have a better quality picture?

2. Is there a generally agreed-upon or majority opinion on what would be a good first purchase disc or set for the Blu-Ray player? I've got my eye on the BBC Planet Earth series, which I've heard good things about, and also looking at the Blade Runner reissue, but I'd like some reassurance of quality. I'm looking for something with some "wow" factor.

3. Is there anything about the Blu-Ray format that you'd tell someone new right off that they might not know?

Thanks in advance for any help.
