It's getting a little out of hand here.
I mean, I had issues with the price when it was first announced, I'm over it though. I will have to have this day 1. Even though people complain about the TC, I still like it and I didn't think it was as bad as everyone said it was. I personally thought it still looked pretty darn good. And now it SHOULD look better. And as far as the # of discs are concerned, a Viva case that holds 1-3 discs is 12.5 mm. A Viva case that holds 4-6 discs is 15 mm. This is NOT going to take up much more space on anyones *precious* little shelf... 7.5 mm... are you REALLY complaining about 7.5 mm of space?

In other words: Why haven't they been upgraded to high-definition for the Blu-ray? Surely they were shot in HD? And the answer is no, they weren't. We've confirmed that all of The Appendices material was shot in 16x9 SD and the finished documentaries were in that resolution and aspect ratio. What's more, the Costa Botes documentaries were 4x3 letterboxed SD. You have to remember, from post-production to finished DVDs, this material was produced in the 1998-2003 timeframe. The HD transition had only just begun, and studios weren't in the habit of paying for HD behind-the-scenes material yet. I think it was closer to 2005-2006 that DVD producers really began shooting such material in HD in anticipation of high-def discs. In the last 5 years or so, it's obviously become standard practice to shoot "making of" in HD. But back then, not so much. So SD IS the final resolution of all this material. As to why all the SD bonus content wasn't collected onto BD-25s for this release, we can only assume it was done to save authoring costs.

Like I said, it SHOULD have quieted down the complaining,

The box art has been released for the SW set? I don't feel like surfing through thousands of pages on the SW board but would you be able to post it/give me a link to it?

Is this the official artwork?

The post Hobbit set is almost sure to feature 3D conversions of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Peter Jackson has expressed his desire to convert the trilogy. Peter Jackson is a huge fan of 3D he is currently shooting The Hobbit natively with 5k red epic 3D cameras.

The special features, not on BD but like that REALLY matters since they are all shot in SD (as I said from the beginning) people complain. Now they are going back to the original 2k master for FotR since so many people complained about the PQ of the TC on BD, and people complain that its not 4k. Seriously!?!?
Totally agree.

Default Lord of the Rings Extended Editions transfer and extras clarifications

Hello, I was just reading another site and found this:
Quote:
Now then... before we get to the release news today, we have a little more Lord of the Rings: Extended Blu-ray information for you. A lot of people have asked about the new 2K remaster of Fellowship. Specifically, a few people have wondered if WHV was cheaping out by not remastering at at least 4K. We've confirmed that 2K was the resolution of the final post-production/editorial master for the film. So unless and until someone goes in and rescans all the film elements at higher resolution, then rebuilds the edit and re-renders all the visual effects at the higher resolution, 2K is the highest resolution element available to master a Blu-ray from. And that's what WHV has apparently gone back to. Today, this kind of film mastering work is mostly done at 4K, but back in 2000-2001, 2K was standard.

A couple other comments on the set: A few readers have complained that The Appendices and Costa Botes documentaries are only included on DVD in standard definition. One other note: The set will include a collectible map of Middle Earth, and the booklets for each film will include a chapter listing and guide to all the extras. So there you go. For those of you've who had questions about these issues, we hope this clarifies things for you a little. We're expecting more technical information from WHV on the set soon, so we'll pass it on to you here as it comes in.
this is taken from thedigitalbits.com, source: http://www.thedigitalbits.com/#mytwocents

no explanation about the split movie, but personally I don't mind about that, nice to see about the other issues though.

That idea makes me sad. Just leave the original trilogy alone!

Has there been any news on single releases for these or is it a limited box set thing? I don't really care for extras and would rather just have the movies separate without 15 discs.

As far as I know, I mean Georgie George had a super huge announcement at the big Electronics show CES and as soon as he did that was the artwork that popped up everywhere. So I'm pretty sure thats the official stuff

No, if there will be, they will wait til after sales slow on the box... just like they did with the TC versions.

Why does it make you sad? If 3D isn't your thing then just don't buy it. Both cuts of the movies are being released in 2D only first and even if the 3D versions do come out, which though very likely isn't 100% official yet, a 2D version will be included. Watching amazing scenes like the battle for helms deep or Gandulfs fight against the Balrog with both eyes being used will be incredible.

I don't understand why people don't like some fans hate the idea of filmmakers modifying there movies so much. As long as the original versions are preserved and everything is being done with the original filmmakers consent its fine with me. Hell the extended cuts are an example of this and most fans consider them the superior version.

Yep. In my eyes....the Director can at any time do whatever the F*** he wants to improve his movie. If Peter Jackson loves 3d, then awesome!

I don't care if anyone else doesn't like 3d....because Peter Jackson and James Cameron are better than you when it comes to films...sorry. And I'm not even an avid 3d supporter - but I do like it in certain cases.

Default If the BD theatrical cut had been included

with this set on 1 disc instead of the special features that we all already have on DVD, would folks have been happier, since they would be getting all Blu-rays and the TE, which many said they passed on in favor of this set, instead of any DVD repurchases? I wonder.

As for me, this is a day one purchase.

I'd actually love it if they included the Theatrical versions! as I highly doubt I'll watch the documentaries (I'd love it, though)

and since the set is like a discs party as is, I'm sure throwing 3 more blu discs (TC) wouldn't hurt..

I just wish you could buy the movie discs. I have all the extras already. Just sell a three movie collection for $50 and I would be much happier than paying $40 more for stuff I already have.

Whats more is that while the trilogy is being converted to 3D maybe they can also re-render the effects at 4k so that a true 4k remaster can be done for the post-Hobbit release. Since for 3D the effects will need a re-render anyway maybe they can kill two birds with one stone.

With each EE being split onto two BDs, it's time for someone to market a BD changer - one that is affordable, not the Sony 400 disc BD changer.

They did release the individual TEs on BD a few months after the boxset.
