If you can rent around 5 Blu-ray movies for the price of purchasing 1 Blu-ray, why just settle for 1?
If you go to Blockbuster to pickup your Blu-ray, and do not see it there, just rent the DVD version. Is it worth buying a $25 movie if you can watch the same one for under $5? I started to collect Blu-rays, but my collection is looking like my DVD collection, in the corner and collecting dust. Why buy? |

I am pro buy choice, if you wish to buy then you should but no one is forcing you to buy. It really is an individual choice.

I agree with your post, the problem is instant gratification.
I have a 1080p tv and ps3, so if there is a movie I want to watch and it's on blu, I will hold out to watch it in blu. I would love to just walk to blockbuster or use netflix, but they are often out of the titles I want. If I buy a blu, I only buy it on some sort of sale. In a perfect world, netflix would adjust their blu stock to conincide with the increase of blu players from the holidays, but that hasn't happened yet. |

im always popping in old movies, when you rent you lose that option...anyway, just about every bluray i have was purchased for under 20 bucks anyway...i refuse to pay 30 bucks for a movie....only one i spent more then 20 was RE:E, but that was 22 after a coupon.

some movies are for buying, some are for renting. if i feel like i will watch the movie 4-5 times over the course of a format, then i will buy it, if otherwise, ill give it a rent once or twice when i got the urge to watch it.

I do both. I can understand why some people don't feel the need to purchase movies, but those people are probably the type that only watch a movie once. I plan to watch every movie I purchase multiple times, if I didn't I would just rent them.

I've mentioned this elsewhere, but since I've become blue (almost two weeks now!) I've started rethinking my whole philosophy about movie collecting.
In the past I used to try and collect nearly everything -- sometimes I'd buy movies I never even got around to watching (I still have "Almost Famous" in shrinkwrap, for example, among perhaps about 20 others). Because of my love for movies it was easy to justify doing this (much, much cheaper than when I bought them first on Beta, then VHS, and finally Laserdisc). But I've been a Netflix user since they started, and now I've decided I'm going to buy only those films I deem "must haves" (the true classics, like Rio Bravo") as well as those films I love to see again and again or are requested by guests (like the POTC series). The last is really important to me -- we have "movie nights" where we invite folks over to watch stuff on our 9' HD screen, and it's impossible to rent something for them to watch since they often don't know what they want until they get there and look at our collection. So I'm picking up stuff I know is good and/or current and will be something guests will want to see on the big screen. And the first point, the classics, is important because sometimes even *I* don't know what I feel in the mood to watch until I sit down to watch something. So I need the core group of movies that have stood the test of time and are those I will watch again and again with no urging (I can hardly wait to sit down and watch "Rio Bravo" in HD on the big screen -- *that* should be an amazing experience. And yet I've seen that film probably two dozen times at the very least). Other than that, even truly great films (like "Eastern Promises", which we rented and watched last night) I don't intend to buy because I either won't watch them again (won't see it again in my lifetime most likely) or because I know they won't be asked for by company. (And as for renting at Blockbuster -- eh, who cares? The nearest one is a 20 mile trip for me, or about $6 in gas both ways, so even if the rental was "free" it would cost far more than getting it in the mail from Netflix). |

I only buy movies that I will be willing to see more than once in a year, unless it's a really good deal, and the movie is marginal--then I will buy those also. It's nice not to have to depend on netflix for your viewing needs (and I don't even have netflix, so...).

As a connoisseur of film and movies, there is no better joy than staring at my collection and beaming with pride - plus, repeat watching of a movie is impossible with rentals.
I've paid an average of $20 for my Blu-Rays, and that isn't as bad as it could be. |
