I pay 96 bucks a month on DirectTV and I'd drop that in a second if I could just record OTA stuff with my PS3. I'd miss watching Dexter on Showtime though! |

I'm sorry Elendyll, but thats just too optimistic. Here is the way I see things happening. I think you have HD DVD being dead by next xmas right, but i think you have blu-ray taking over so easily wrong.
1. In Jan. Target announces that they are removing all HD DVD software from their shelves. No other retailers follow 2. Late Jan. leaks of WB exclusivity begin to pour out again 3. Early (like Groundhog Day) Feb. WB exclusivity is announced for blu-ray. HD DVD prices drop and sell well due to ignorance at most retailers and consumers. 4. April - Ken Graffeo decides he wants to spend time with his family more. 5. Late April - Universal announces neutrality, but titles and quality transfers on catalog titles really don't come out very fast. 6. May - HD DVD players are going for less than $69 street value at retailers to spur intrest/clear out inventory, BOGOs are rampent with HD DVD. The HD DVD promo group will say that they are so cheap because its so much cheaper to produce. This causes the Nielsen's to go from their standard 80:20 back down to about 70:30. 7. June Paramount releases titles such as Braveheart, Gladiator, and a few other big time catalog titles exclusively for HD DVD. For a few weeks we see 2:1 numbers again, HD DVD goes on a massive PR spur saying that they have the momentum and are coming back. Early Sept - with profile 1.0 players selling now at $199 and the cheaper chinese 1.1 players at $249, blu-ray finally announces that it has overcome HD DVD in standalones. The first 2.0 profile player (besides PS3) is released for $399. Late Sept. - MS announces that it will no longer be producing the xbox add on and that they believe neither HD format caught on and digital downloads are the future, massive new LIVE service. Most retailers have no more hd dvd titles in their stores, over the past few months, hd dvd has gradually been getting less in less shelf space, but it was so obvious hd dvd was losing, the retailers did not want to po any CE manufacturs and announced that hd dvd was getting dropped from their stores. (note: if WB doesn't go exclusive, this will turn into a different story has stores will announce that they are dropping hd dvd, simply to make sure blu-ray survives and they don't get cut out of teh equation) a few best buys or circuit city's might have a few titles still in stock that havn't been sold or dumped Oct. - Toshiba also believes both formats have failed and have magically gone from making hardware to helping out with MS download services. Basically, they no longer make hardware for either format, but help out with the hardware/software wide of LIVE downloads. Late Oct. - Paramount announces that they will not be releasing anymore HD DVDs anymore and they believe also that digital downloads are the future and release HD content exclusively through LIVE. This is how they get to still keep their 150 million/ Late Oct - Universal drops HD DVD too. Nov. - MS promotes their LIVE service rampently, they have titles from Disney, Fox, Universal, Paramount, and Warner Bros. They say it is cheaper and simpler to use than blu-ray. Dec. - A blu-ray sells 1 million copies Jan 09 - Dreamworks leaves Paramount and is a part of Universal now. They release on blu-ray now. April 09 - Paramount finally agrees to release content on blu-ray. June 09 - Toshiba announces they are making a blu-ray player. Aug 10 - MS will announce the next xbox, it will have a blu-ray drive in it. They will claim that now the market is ready for blu-ray, however LIVE downolads will still be a major part of the xbox. The new XBOX is set to hit stores in 2011. Blu-ray shares the HD world with digital downloads, blu-ray will thrive, and downloads will do alright, at least good enough that their will always be a market for them. The PS3 will also have a download service too. The general idea is that downloads are the new rental stores (hollywood video, blockbuster, etc.) Last edited by stockstar1138; 01-03-2008 at 04:23 PM. |

Basically what you'd have is a small box housing your cable/OTA tuner with a slot for your CableCard, the incoming feed would be split with one feed going to your ps3 via the cable/OTA tuner and the other feed going to your cable box or direct to your TV. The cable/OTA tuner would attach to the ps3 via a usb cable which would also supply power and control to the tuner device. Obviously an interface application would run on the ps3 for channel control/interface, tv guide, and DVR record/playback/management. Playback would be thru your existing HDMI/component connection for the ps3 and content storage would be on the ps3's hard drive. |

This seems a tad optimistic to me. But heck, if you are right that would be awesome. Although i doubt the 360 would have an internal BD drive... it is more likely going to have an add-on if anything.

The gist of the post is supposed to be that the people with HD DVD will not just flock to blu-ray, but attempt to go with downloads instead. |

Sorry if this has been referenced before (I'm a first-time poster, and have been reading here for about a month).
Does anyone else find Amazon's treatment of HD DVD vs. Blu-ray to be pro-red? Seems like their "more details" columns stresses blu short-comings, but mostly skips over blu advantages. Maybe I'm just too affected by my time here and newfound passion for blu disks, but: http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.htm...01&pf_rd_i=130 |

1. They can start putting HD games on a Blu-ray disc for increased capacity. (Still be BW compatable with existing games too as to not alienate existing users.) 2. Yet another alternative for a next gen player. |

how will they not be alienating existing users if the games are on a BD and 16 million xboxes only read dvd. |

They would never put 360 games on anything other than DVDs.
There are too many 360s already out there that use DVD games and would be unable to read new games on either HD DVD or Blu-ray. The only thing they CAN do is add an add-on or an optional internal BD drive that would only play movies. I think an internal drive would be a waste since most ppl already have a 360, and so the only real answer would be to add a BD add-on. Maybe on the next XBOX console they will add BD support, especially if they want to have a console that can compare with the next PlayStation. |

Basically in Feb. 08 you see them exclu (like in my predictions), but you also see the Nielsen going back to 70:30 in May ? O.o If the WB move is correct, I doubt that even $69 players will save HD DVD from the mass of articles predicting its imminent death due to lack of content... I also have to let out doubts as per MS being ready to just replace a HD disc format by a Live download feature by Sept 08, My 2cps. ![]() |

The BR drive will play all of their old DVD games should it hypothetically be bundled in.
No one is being alienated. It will play all your games as normal. If you want to play any new XBOX HD games on BR Disc you'd have to go buy a new console with the BR player in it. Likewise... If you want to play PS3 games you have to go buy a PS3. It will still play your PS2 and PS1 games. Just like a BR drive will play all of the old xbox DVD games. Did Sony alienate all of us? Nope, that's just the way business works. |
