I have not updated to 5 or 5.1 yet. So far i have read tonight that people are having prob with playing BD movies. Where the movie would freeze a couple of time for a few seconds. Didnt happen before the recent update. So im going to wait a few day. Plus im sure hoping/waiting Sony will have an update to where the PS3 upconverts regular dvds.

I wish the PS3 was like my TiVo and automatically updated itself. This is getting to be a pain.

I'm getting those Freezing errors after updating to 1.51. Nothing major, just annoying...

Default PS3 Update To Allow Background Downloading

I couldn't find any other place to put this so I put it here. I also didn't see any posts about it. Mods please close if you need to.

Quote:
The update should address one of the biggest issues PS3 owners have had with the PlayStation Store and the download system. Right now, if we download a demo or trailer or whatever from the Store, we can't do anything else during the download. This may not irritate everyone, but it's in contrast to the Xbox 360, which allows background downloading. Thanks to a recent Game Informer interview with Sony's Phil Harrison, this is going to change with Update 1.6.

This version 1.6 must be the March 23 update (that is in-line with the PAL launch).

Looking good so far

I hear that the next update for the ps3 will be next month in March, at the same time that the European ps3 launch will happen. Does anyone know what the update will include or fix? Does anyone know what future updates will bring or fix in the years to come and how many updates there will be in the consoles lifecycle?

Phil confirmed the background downloading...said there were some other cool things coming in March update but that if he said anything more he would be killed or at least severely hurt by the folks responsible for that area of development .

FYI the 360 didn't have background downloading at launch either. I believe it took 6 or 7 months as well.

So with background downloading, you could download a file and do something else at the same time? What I would like to see would be a memory card manager for ps1 and ps2 cards, plus an option to transfer a ps1 or ps2 game file directly to a memory card.

There is a lot of speculation (or hope) on the PS3 forums that the march update will give the PS3 the ability to upscale dvd.

DVD upscaling would be great, though I've already decided to bin my DVD player when my PS3 arrives, my tv does a great job of upscaling via component, so via HDMI it can't be worse, but might be better.

Background downloading would be good too, as would the means to allow a PSP to access media while the PS3 is playing a game or movie.

Phil Harrison has also hinted that it won't be too long before Sony introduces downloadable movies and tv progs.

The HD eyetoy must be on the way too, so video chat between buddies can't be far away.

What else might they introduce? Can the browser run streaming content, like Realplayer? That would be useful for sites, news, etc, that offer video content.

Maybe the Sony Connect site will get a PS3 version so you can buy and download music direct to your PS3? I would certainly make use of that.

What about simple software that enabled you to edit photo's? remove red-eye, etc? Would anyone make use of that?

Improved SACD playback (even better than before) and 1080p/24fps support are on the works and will be released within this year. (unknown if included in the March update)

Standard-def videochat with an original EyeToy is already supported isn't it?

1080p/24, DVD upscaling, and downloadable content would all be very cool upgrades. I'd also really like the ability to get content from my PC via a network share.
