Alien looks even better than Alien Resurrection. Why? Because Alien had a new scan for the Blu Ray and Alien Resurrection used an old scan that was used for the DVDs. For those of you who say the OT trilogy wouldn't have benefited from a new scan are clouded by the dark side of the Force.

Says who? Considering how many exposures/matting shots there are (particularly in ANH), it would have been anything but clean. The standards of presentation have come a long way since then.

I can't see the runtimes, either. But it could be an added section to the credits to give attribution to the people who worked on the Blu-ray alterations.

Keep in mind that Alien was digitally remastered for its 20th Anniversary theatrical re-release (which was the basis of the BD, evidenced in the slight changes in color-timing). Typically, they spend a lot more time and money on those kinds of masters than they do for 'HD'. The point is: It's generally possible to give an old film a stunning Blu-ray presentation, but 'they' are not always willing to pony up the cash to do it right. "Just slap some DNR on that old 2k file made for HDTV broadcasts and unload it onto the viewer."

Oh, and if anybody wants more of those 70mm scans Kryptonic posted: http://www.jedi1.net/

That's the official excuse he gives. The real excuse is that he doesn't want to...period. End of discussion.

From all the reading I've done, it wouldn't take Lucas long or cost all that much to do a new scan of the Original Trilogy in their theatrical cuts. Either he has pristine prints or he knows where to get pristine prints for a rescan.

Either way, it's never been about cost. It's about his way or the highway, nothing more.

It's pretty simple - he doesn't want to spend the money or time on something that he considers inferior.

Kryptonic,

Bingo. The key word you use is "inferior" product. That's just how he feels about the theatrical cuts. The mistakes, as he sees them, have always pained him after he was done with them, especially Episode IV. That film never sat right with him.

Again, the hypocrisy is laughable, on both sides. We have those clamouring for the UOT because the changes are so abhorent (by the way, I do to some degree agree - Greedo shooting, Ronto's in front of the camera, Jabba and flying droids all need to go) but on the other hand welcoming the major change of Yoda in TPM.

It seems to me that if the change makes you happy, you like it, if not, it is the raping of your childhood etc etc.

The one thing I do know, with the money, resources and freedom he has, Mr. Lucas is not being practical in holding back releasing ALL versions of his film on Blu Ray. It would be fascinating to watch the evolution, like it or not, of just the special effects. Then we could all be happy, owning the version of each film we deem to be the least offensive.

The thing he has to be aware of is the Star Wars generation is aging, and with age comes wisdom. This release could be the final dip for a lot of people, they may not want to jump on to the bandwagon again for a substandard product.

In fact, I can go on record as saying this will be the last Star Wars movie purchase I make, unless some blinding new technology emerges in my life time that means they can be holographically projected into my living room.

merlinpants,

But see, that's the difference with Lucas. He's not thinking about the aging Star Wars generation with these Special Editions. He's thinking about the generations of new Star Wars fans yet to come who won't have a clue about the theatrical cuts and the Special Editions.

To them, they'll just be Star Wars...and that's what he wants.

For the record, I am in favor of Lucas' changes and alterations. Big time.

Your not wrong, but with kids myself, they have there own generation of films, and Star Wars is something Dad likes. Harry Potter, LOTR, Twilight () have superceded Star Wars in the eyes of the youth. GL has kept Star Wars alive with the clone wars series (and potentially a live action series that may never see the light of day). The dwindling returns of the PT showed that the new audience would only accept it to a small degree.

The OT are now classics and the younger generation will treat them that way. Look at all the forums, mostly 30-40 year olds having slanging matches about how their childhood was raped, or 18-30 year olds professing how much better the prequels are.

Each generation had ITS star wars, but now that is fading away. He should just release the whole lot, every version, and milk his audience while they still exist.

Although Star Wars will always hold its place in cinematic history, will it forever hold a place in the next generations film collection?

Kryptonic,

I'm with you.

merlinpants,

I think the saga will hold a place in future collections. Forget the story. These films are also a tech highlight reel for the technological advancements in modern cinema. That alone should place it on every film collector's shelf.

The dwindling returns of the PT showed that the new audience would only accept it to a small degree.

I don't know about dwindling returns. If he stopped at Episode II, I'd agree. But, Episode III reversed that.

Unfortunately, using today's youth is not a very good arguement point. Today's youth just goes from what is hot to what is hot next. They are a disposable generation, they just buy whatever is place in front of their eyes and all go crazy claiming it to be the greatest thing ever! until the next new shinny little thing you pass in front of their eyes. Today's youth remind's me of Dug in Up....Squirrel!!!!!! with a 30 second attention span.

It may well be that in 40 years, onnce most of the original fans will be long gone, Star Wars may not have the same impact on the buying public it as now but I suspect it will still find room in a lot of people collection, in whatever format they have then. They might even find they way into the Criterion collection by then?
