Default What do you gain from a Preamplifier

I just recently ordered a XPA-2. I seen many people on here on blu.com with preampilifer as well as a receiver. I already have one of the best receiver on the market today would I gain anything at all by hooking my XPA-2 up to a preamplifer? rather than just hooking it up to my receiver

A lighter pocketbook
I use a receiver as my pre with no complaints

+1!

I looked into pre-amps quite a bit before getting a receiver and there really wasn't much to gain except for higher prices and less amps. No reason to go there really unless the price is competitive to a similarly capable AVR.

Also you can use the amps on the AVR to bi-amp the highs on a speaker. I do
with no complaints. Works great for me.

I have been looking at power amps and i would like to know if the emotiva savvy people would exclude the outlaw series of power amplifiers? They seem to offer good power for the money, 7 channels for $999. Emotiva would have you spend more to get the same.

Outlaw is direct competition for Emotiva. Emotiva used to sell the UPA-7 for less than that, but it wasn't very popular so they discontinued it.

I haven't heard anything bad about Outlaw amps, although I have never heard one in person. I've looked at their website a fair few times and been tempted by a couple of their sales, but the fact of the matter is that my amp needs are currently filled.

[Show spoiler]The closest thing to a strike against Outlaws reputation is that the only fervent voices I have personally heard to be pro Outlaw are doing so as to be anti Emo. By which I mean, they don't own Outlaws or Emos, they just hate Emos.

If I needed another amp, I would certainly look at Outlaw before I made a decision, as I'm sure most people on the board would.

Has anyone tried splitting the 12-V trigger signal to two amps? I'm currently using both trigger outs for my amps. I need to use one of them for a new device so I was thinking of splitting one for the two amps.

I have never tried this or read if anyone else that has. I would test and see and if not then you can always get this http://emotiva.com/et3.shtm

A friend of mine bought an Outlaw 5 channel amp and brought it over, we did some pretty un-scientific testing and I we couldn't hear any difference between his or my Emotiva XP5. We are both very happy with our purchases.

One difference between the two amps was that the Outlaw actually had a locking mechanism on their XLR inputs... turns out his unit had faulty ones and my cables actually got stuck in his inputs! I ended up sending him home with my cables as we just could get them out at my place. He eventually was able to get them out with a screwdriver at home but he called Outlaw the next day and they quickly shipped him out a new amp and apologized for the inconvenience.

The only other difference I know of between the two was that I believe you can buy the Outlaw 5 channel as a 'truly' balanced amp, where as the XPA may not be 'truly' balanced. I may be wrong here, but I think the only 'truly' balanced amp emotiva makes is the XPA1... please don't kill me on this one guys if I'm wrong, but please do correct me as I don't want to spread any misinformation.

My MMC only has one trigger output and I split it to go to both of my amps. Works fine.

I have had both the now discontinued upa-7 and lpa-1 from Emotiva and found them very comparable to the Outlaw 7125 I had but at the time the Emotiva offerings were $549 and $499 vs the Outlaw being $999. Now with the Emotiva 7 channel amps being discontiued the outlaw is a good option for those looking for a single amp with 7 channels at a good price. I woud wait as they seem to put the 7125 on sale for $699 every now and then and at that price its a great buy.

Thanks Judd. I was concerned that splitting might drop the voltage too much to work.
