I'm half way through AOTC and there are some really great shots, but alot of the film is soft - but thats not surprising given the explanation above.

The teal tint is distracting at times but the shots of Anakin and Padmé on Naboo are AMAZING. If it were a little more detailed it would be up there with the shot of Bond and Vesper in Casino Royale. That location in Italy just looks breathtaking in HD.

At the moment I'm giving this a 4/5, again this would get a 5 had the picture not been as soft and the teal tint weren't there. 5/5 for the audio.

Wait until you see ROTS. Stunningly crisp picture. There were a few scenes where the grain seemed to pulse on the screen, getting more visable then dieing down again, anyone else experiance this?

Default Senitype

Just received my Star Wars box set from Amazon today. Finally !

I was pleased with the Senitype. It seems really good to have a copy of an actual 35mm frame.

But I was a rather curious about the senitype. According to the info on the card, it says that the 35mm film frame was a copy taken from the original film footage. But Revenge Of The Sith was filmed digitally, so there wouldnt have been any original film footage.

Perhaps its from a 35mm frame from a release print, but according to IMDB, the release prints were 35mm anamorphic. In an anamorphic print the 2.35:1 image would appear over the entire 35mm frame and would been stretched vertically. However, the 35mm frame in the senitype is clearly a 2.35:1 image with large black bars. This couldnt have come from a 35mm anamorphic frame. So where was it copied from ?

Nothing so grand I'm sure! Just a cheap print on a bit of acetate! I have a looking glass, and had a good look, as you do! If that was projected it'd look crap! But as a freebie it's OK, can't really complain.

It does

On a different note, how old are Owen and Beru supposed to be, because in III they look about 20-25 yet in IV they look in there 60s. I always figured there was only about 20 years between those two Episodes so they should only be about 45 max.

I guess they should have used older looking actors in the PT

You're right. It's a replica of an original. Mass produced all of the same scene. For a freebie it's fine, but not really something that will apreciate in value over the years.

The whole Senitype thing is a bit odd though:

Watched Episode 1-3 today and wow was blown away of the picture quality of episode 1, don't get me wrong episode 2/3 quality are great but didn't blow me away like episode 1 did. I would like to see other peoples review on this. People complain about no grain and all, which is fine I do and do not like grain it really depends on what I watch. For example Grain on Taxi Driver is fine with and so forth. Episode 1 is well sharp and it was amazing to watch. Have not seen episode 4-6 yet, but I have quickly checked episode 4 and I can see theres grain so alot of people will be happy or not happy. And I don't mind the film looking like that with grain but from what I saw there was nothing great about the picture I saw it wasn't breathtaking like other older films been transferred to Blu.

I just watched Episode 1 tonight. For me the PQ was really hit & miss. One minute it looks stunning with loads of detail, the next an average picture which looks smooth, or just not as sharp. I thought Liam Neeson in particular had a somewhat "waxy" look to his face. But then there were other shots, like of Naboo or in space, which looked great. I've read that TPM is the poorest transfer of the 6 films though, so it should be all good from here onwards.

Episode 1 went to far with the DNR on removing grain from the film and I would say is the worst out the lot. It looked very soft in places.

Episode 2 and 3 were very good transfers. 2 and 3 were shot in digital and had digital masters that were grain free and they obviously used those.

Episodes 4 - 5 and 6 looked great to me. I saw EP1 first and was expecting the worse for 4 to 6 but luckly 4, 5 and 6 did not suffer the same fate as EP1

I might upset a few people when I say this, but after seeing all 6 films, I found that I enjoyed the PQ a lot more on the PT than on the OT.

Now I'm not saying the PQ on the OT is worse than the PT because it's not. It looks amazing. It retains film grain and has a lot of fine detail. But obviously it shows it's age. And I prefer the look of the PT.

The same thing with the audio too. It sounds just as amazing as the PT but you can tell the recordings are old. I really don't know how to explain it properly, but hopefully someone understands me.

I do like the story of the OT more than the PT though. As for Episode 1, I was blown away by the PQ when I seen it for the first time. Yes, I could tell there had been a lot of DNR done, there are lots of scenes that have a really smooth look to them, and certain charecters apear "waxey" at times like some people have already said. Despite it's flaws, the majority of it looks brilliant, and even in some of the "smoother" scenes you can still make out a lot of detail.

Episode 2 looses a lot of the problems from TPM, but gains new ones due to the way it was filmed at the time, definately a slight improvement over TPM.

Eisode 3 truely is breathtaking! I honestly can't put in to words just how clear and crisp the picture is on that film. I admit, I had read this sites review before having watched it so I already had high expectations, but the review great as it is simply didn't prepare me for what I was about to witness. Simply one of the best transfers ever put on Blu-ray!

I pick this up on Friday morning. Ive sort of been holding off but now that I see there are more positive reviews than negative ones I have decided to buy.

I am a Star Wars fan like most but did not want to buy incase the transfers did not do the saga justice.

Looks like a weekend of lightsabers and blaster fire for me !!!

I don't know if I can say Episode 3 is the best transfer to Blu-Ray but I really did like the PQ on it and Ep.2

Ep 1 for me was great, even tho people say about the DNR but I loved the picture quality, it may have been hit and miss but I loved it all the way through.

When I was watching Ep 3 I did see some grain...or was that just my eyes? Even tho I know they filmed it in Digital but I swear there was slight grain in the background if you went close to the tv. Don't get me wrong it wasn't an eyesore. Just would like to know what you guys saw/think.

You're right, I saw grain in III too. Not all the time though, some of the scenes in the Chancelors office had a kind of pulsating grain (or maybe noise?) that would apear and then die down.

I really liked all three PT transfers. The thing I loved most about TPM is that the colours are so vibrant in that film, espicially on Naboo. The transfer to HD really brings out the colour like never before, same goes for II and III.
